NZJon: Hi xlinknz, Both the Telecom and Vodafone networks have been upgraded very recently, which is great. There is a new Vodafone transmitter on the hill above Pupu Valley Road, which should (I think) reach out to Paton's Rock. Telecom is now pumping out (at least 3G) from Mount Burnett (I don't know if it is 21Mpbs or not, though). I know people in Paton's Rock who use Telecom T Sticks, and also people who use Vodafone Vodems. That tells me that both networks work just fine out there. Hope that helps, Jon

Well I assumed that I would be better of using TCNZ since my current carrier 2D said the 3G coverage from VFNZ was so so, the VFNZ maps also showed that their 3G extended on 900Mhz was 'one bar' strenght according to their own coverage maps

The Pupu location is certainly closer than Mount Burnett if that makes a difference ?

ps: the owner of where I am staying said birds hill tower [whereever that is] was also upgraded which improved her tcnz signal strength

Ah yeah, the Bird's Hill tower *is* the tower above Pupu Valley Road.

Over the past few weeks I've been getting much better consistency from Vodafone--ping times are pretty much constant at 250-300ms, whereas Telecom goes from 250ms waaaaay up to over 25 *seconds*... Based on that, and if you think there is reception in Paton's Rock, I'd probably plump for Vodafone. However, given that you can get a T Stick or Vodem from Trade Me for as little as $15, if you want to cover yourself, I'd get one of each, just to be on the safe side ;)

As far as the rural fibre map goes, I think that is only showing fibre that has been completed. So perhaps there is more to be added once the work in golden bay is complete? I guess there are some existing ducts in the bay and those won't be available for connection. If the schools and hospital are just teeing off those that might explain why there is such a small area on the map.

Last time I looked the prices for RBI wireless from vfnz were pretty steep. These guys might be worth a look depending on where you are : valley.net.nz

Vodafone's RBI pricing is pretty steep. Most other RBI resellers have cheaper pricing.

RBI has been set up to fail, compared to urban product IMHO.

Different markets, costs, and requirments. Yes, RBI will not be competitive in an urban market. Its not aimed at an Urban market

Update - I left Patons Rock Beach last night. I was getting a consistant 2-5Mbps on my TCNZ handset. Of note for 2 days a Chorus van was working on the cabinet at the junction of Patons Rock Rd and SH60 [& at Collingwood too]. Whether this means xDSL to the Patons Rock beach community I do not know ?

That said my curiousity got the better of me and last night & I purchased 50MB of prepaid data from 2D so I could do some tests on my regulat handset. Unfortunately for some reason I was unable to run ookla speedtests on my Android 2.2 2D handset [but could on Wifi and the TCNZ handset]. I'd like to think 2D don't block speedtests !?
