No it isn't, although it is recommended.

For A Chorus provided VDSL install - A xDSL Master Spliter instalation and Cat5E/Cat6 cable (actualy now a hybrid cable -Cat5e + 2 Fibre) is mandatory to be installed by the installer at the time of installation. Existing installed cables such as 2pr Homelan or 3 pr twisted 6way can be used if the installation of new cables are not possible due to building construction issues.

wierd. We've had quite a few VDSL 'connection only' in the last few weeks. No wiring requested, or installed. All working fine.

Hi, there is no real technical reason to "have" to deploy a filter, I believe chorus have performed lab and field tests that indicate that the filter does provide some "impedance taming" but I dont believe anything that says a filter is required.

However from a long term stock status point of view, to deploy a filter means should the house dweller change and a preference to return to a pots+dsl connection then to have the house wiring ready to support that to prevent a truck roll makes total sense. So for Chorus to spec that each time they touch a house to make a DSL compliant outlet, then to install a filter to allow for a pots option, either now or in the future is perfectly reasonable.

Cheers everyone for your input.
Turns out it was the Linksys WAG200G giving me problems. Last night I borrowed a mates modem and got over 15M upload.

Thank you to Vodafone who have just come out with VDSL plans. I have just signed up and am paying the same amount as I did with ADSL and I have more GB!

What exchange / cabinet do you think you are connected to?

I am doing a master filter because the forums talk about looking at your wiring before doing anything else. I went to the demarc and traced the cable to the first jack point. I disconnected every other line.
I was going to run CAT cable from the filter and have everything new.

I was told I was probably on the cabinet at 46 Royal Road.
If I was further away, I would expect my attenuation to be higher.

You mean Cat5e? There are currently 6 categories to choose from so we never just call it "CAT"....

The master splitter is a way to separate working phones on dodgy internal phone wiring from the nice new Cat5e link to your modem. Since you don't have landline phones on naked dsl, the only reason to install a master splitter is to allow a future tenant/landlord to switch back to standard DSL/phone services in future. However its worth having a test outlet at the cable entry point if you don't have a master filter.

Time to find a new industry!
