Zeon: What is the procedure for changing the position of an ONT out of interest? Like if I bought a new house and wanted it moved to the patch cabinet rather than being stuck on the closest wall they can find. Anyone with a splicer can just extend the cable?

Yea exatcly. All you need is a splicer. But in saying that I guess Chorus own the fibre at the ONT so people shouldn't really screw with it. At the end of the day it isn't rocket science and someone who owns a splicer is more than capable of shifting an ONT.
Things are going to end up just like they have with phone jacks. People will realise it isn't that hard and customers won't want to pay absorbanent Chorus rates so 'cowboys' will come and move them.
Chorus are going to want to shift an ONT for next to nothing if they don't want the UFB network to end up like the copper network.

You do realise that splicers are $10k+. Not really in the price range for a 'handyman' to do. I'd personally prefer a trained professional to work with the fibre in my house, especially because fibre is a lot more difficult to deal with than copper.
Also you have to consider that you have agreed with chorus during the install that you will not mess with their network, so if you do you are liable for damages.
