I can use maybe a couple hundred megs a day streaming music in. Unfortunately I'm between hotspots, there are two on the street I work in (Bowen) but I'm just out of range :( I wonder if I can get a repeater with a direction antenna...

While i support moving onwards and upwards with technology, it's definitely a marketing move more than anything. Its been branded as GigaWifi to go along side the gigatown marketing promotion. For the majority of users it brings no practical benefit over the usual wifi set up. It does however "future proof" in going with the newer standard, abeit at a higher cost.
I do believe they should have spent the money on deploying more wifi hotspots in useful places, but i imagine this has its own budget thats separate from the general wifi roll out, and when it comes to budgets, they are allocated to that purpose alone. It's likely that if this wasn't happening, the money probably would have gone to another marketing initiative and not be spent on more wireless APs. Though in another thread a telco employee mentioned that focus on projects (and i assume their budgets too) shifts rapidly.
And i'd like to see a second encrypted "TelecomSecure" SSID running RADIUS which logs in using your "My Telecom" credentials, for those who dont want to be constantly browsing in the open or run VPNs.
