Airmax TDMA on the point to multipoint at the far end, no TDMA on the (5x) backhaul links with three of those links having mikrotik routers at the high sites - I am gradually rolling out routers with OSPF for high site routing redundancy so the latency will go up a little bit as a result, but nothing noticable to the end user - our main goal is to just exceed the performance of 3g/rbi and farmside.

Its sort of a major step up from regular wifi because on the backhaul links there are things like packet aggregation that are seperate from the TDMA protocols. Then we do things like port+link bonding and stuff like that

I looked at Ubiquiti TDMA a year back but from what I could tell the RF was still CSMA with software polling for TDMA on top. That may have since changed. I do like the look of the rocket GPS system. A friend in a small community in Australia swears by it.

I use Mikrotik NStreme for point to multi-point but I can't imagine running more than a handful of people with the gear given the shared bandwidth limitation. Or are you using 802.11n?

Well we have now got a connection(for about 2 or 3 weeks now) through velocity, thanks to my parents and their business.
See below for the speed test comparisons, hopefully I get the links right

Note the funny ping on the 1st velocity test, I redid the test and got a more normal ping.

Side note, they have changed the speed test page...

Wasnt sure how Nz networks are routed so thought it would be a fair comparison going out of the country.
I knew using the woosh speed test server would not be a fair comparison

Shouldnt vary enough to make a difference. Also ping times are higher off shore... Best to test to Vodafone, Telecom, snap servers.

Thats pretty good.
If you want super fast speed, then RBI is the better option right now - although the radio that velocity will probably have installed on your roof could be capable of up to 40mbits if you are within 10km of the tower (but that requires fancy backhaul fibre and stuff which they probably dont do yet, which RBI does have)
Installation of the velocity looks cheaper than some other pricing I have seen around, and the per-gigabyte cost is much less too.

I'm guessing that a new router and outdoor antenna will be needed Fraser?

Has anyone mentioned an approximate timeframe for rollout to upgraded 3G 900MHz sites in rural areas?

Can't say anything official, but it's well rumoured Vodafone have many sites 700 ready. I think we'll see quite a bit of LTE 700 go live his year, but probably be next year at the earliest before we see this opened up for RBI.
