Still waiting to hear back from chorus. I guess it will take awhile. If email fails I will have to call.

koyukon: Ah thanks Jonb, lots of useful info there.
I'm pretty sure the line was part of the 'Rural Broadband Initiative (properties/farms are adjacent to the new Fibre can get connected). So there is hope.

Plambrechtsen, I might grab those details. I'll call my ISP first to see if they can help at all.

edit: Isp has given me a number to call tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how I get on just in case others have a similar question in future.

Get a gigabit to your house then setup a WiFi tower thing and resell 54Mbp/s WiFi links :)

I'm reselling my UFB using an array of ubiquity dish's, to people up in the Auckland Waitacks, its working very well!  I can see all of the Waitacks with very good direct line of sight.  One guy was quick to ditch his DSL line he was having problems with and already had chorus out multiple times, he's now very impressed with the significantly faster upload speed.

where exactly in the waitacks, sounds interesting.. and depending on where, might even be able to line the parents up with you too, they also have full view of the bethells/waitak valley which could be quite a decent possible expansion point for you, assuming your doing a P2P 'net' setup.

although they should get vdsl within the next year too..

Getting slightly OT but the performance on that link will be rubbish - it's got terrible chain alignment and noise floor which will cause massive retries.

I would suggest anybody interested in RBI fibre contact Snap - they're doing a lot of work in this area at present.

Well we're getting good actual throughput of about 50 to 60mbits over this link with very good fresnel clearance at both ends, its not rubbish and is actually working very well as per my previous post, so why your very assumptive comment?  You are welcome to come and check it out.

When you say "working well" are you meaning TCP performance or just testing using the built in UDP speedtest? Having installed literally hundreds of UBNT units I look at that and see it as being a poor quality link. Looking at an 11dBm imbalance in chains (which should be no more than 5db) and the strength of chain1 only being 7db better than the noise floor as well as very low airmax capacity is a recipe for retries which will cause very poor TCP performance.

Or is the link a lot better now than it was in 2011 when they shot was taken?

Cheers, I've sent them an email as well as trustpower who also seem to be helpful to rural people. Hopefully one can help.

Chorus didn't respond.

Apologies for no response from Chorus about this (there are changes afoot), in the mean time this is what I can see...

You are served off the Ohaupo Exchange, right on the border, the Conklin at the cemetery is being upgraded to VDSL in June, but far too far away from you to help (two cabinets away to be precise).  So no planned upgrades for Copper for you.

As for Fibre, yes indeed that is Rural Fibre running passed you to the School.  There was always meant to be the opportunity for Rural folk to get Fibre from these links, the only announcement I've seen recently was Schools able to provide Wireless to their neighbourhood (which won't help you of course).  When I get back to the office next week I'll look into where that product is at and if I can comment publicly about it I will.

Cheers,
PJ.

Well hopefully it's public since there is information on the Chorus site about it :)

Hi, as per Steve Biddle's comments, if you have much more than 6dB chain diff (you have around 10) then real throughput is seriously stunted, have not installed as many at steve, but still quite a number.

That's great news, I appreciate it. We are looking to upgrade to fibre as soon as possible so whatever news you have to get the ball rolling is good news.
