My fibre was installed today - sooner than I thought. Im with NOW NZ - www.nownz.co.nz

All went almost well but I couldn't get pfSense to connect. In the end I got a router pre-setup by NOW which connected straight away but I still couldn't get any web traffic - email and phone worked sweet. It turned out to be a problem at the NOW end and they had to give me a new static IP to fix it - could have been worse I suppose.

After this all I had to do was remove the router and configure pfSense: go to Interfaces - WAN and set the IPv4 Configuration Type to PPPoE, configure Username and Password to the details NOW assigned to my account and it worked first time. Service name was left blank (default) and all other defaults were left as-is.

NOW does untag the signal so no VLAN was required.

Speed is good I suppose, about what I was expecting, 89.1Mbits down, 48.3Mbits up averaged over 4 tests.




I was hoping to be able to publish the exact settings required for VLAN tagging but since my ISP doesn't use it I don't know what the setup requirement is - sorry.

So my Fiber install was today. Seems no one told the chorus technician. What a waste of a days leave from work. I did get to listen to 78 minutes of jazz sax while on hold so I guess I've got that going for me which is nice.

ripdog: One example of DHCP UFB is Orcon. I love how easy it is to set up, all you need is to set the router MAC to the MAC of the genius router you were sent, VLAN 10 tagging, and standard DHCP on the WAN port. Job done.

I understand PPP adds a decent amount of overhead which cripples 200+ megabit services. The ASUS RT-AC66U, one of the most powerful routers on the market today, is unable to push 300mbit over WAN when PPPoE is in use. Plain Ethernet and it goes to over 800mbit.

No doubt custom-supplied ISP routers can do better with specific optimizations, but I do wonder if ISPs will instead choose to switch to DHCP as UFB speeds increase?


The Ubiquiti Edge Router Lite can do almost Gigabit speeds on PPPoE connections when it is is running ver 1.5 firmware (still in beta). Speeds only limited by the Gigabit Ethernet ports. Can't post a link sorry as that was on the ubiquiti beta forum which you need a login to access. (can get one for free) Although that router is more targeted to the commercial / prosumer market (those who would otherwise buy a Mikrotik). Im using one myself on Snap UFB. Had some fun configuring it (had to do a crash course in router command line interface). But it is providing a very solid connection and im really happy with it. Looking at some of the screenshots for it's GUI from the 1.5 firmware. It looks like you will be able to easily setup a UFB connection without needing any command line interface knowledge.
