10 to 30 minutes downtime is pretty normal...But I wouldn't really consider that "downtime", haha.

If you can confirm that when you churn to Slingshot, you are not switching to their "Better Network" and you start the churn process with the new provider the risk is greatly decreased.  If there is Better Network gear in the area, I'd probably request not to be connected to it anyway.

So in general the core of the problem is that there are too many areas in NZ with insufficient number of ports.
What is the main cause of this and what needs to happen for this to change?
I keep hearing about all the money being spend on broadband yet in too many places people can't even get internet access.
What is going on?

If you move provider you could risk losing service if there are port waiters in your area, but the odds of this are slim because you're going through a churn and not a disconnect.


This ^

Would only happen if your new ISP or Chorus mess up the Churn request somehow.

Simple economics, there are rural areas with not enough customers to justify the expense of installing the equipment.

The rural broadband initiative has been subsidised/funded to improve the situation

... but there will never be 100% coverage to every "whopsville".

Also if your area is under-served currently, chances are there will be a local wifi operator doing something interesting in your space or there is an opportunity for one.
