AKA prepare for the "I don't get gigabit over wireless" or "my router keeps crashing" posts soon, this is the main reason the campaign is a huge waste of money, people don't understand and I think this "third world country" has gotten a little ahead of them.

And you mean my $399 laptop wont work in my $400 router for the gigatown wifi speeds and I have to upgrade that too?

But I tried doing a speedtest over Ethernet instead of Wifi. And I can still only get 100mbit. - What do you mean I can't use my 100BaseT 8 port network switch anymore? It worked fine when I still had ADSL.

Chorus has today announced the five towns that have gone through to the final round of the Gigatown competition. Dunedin, Gisborne, Nelson, Timaru and Wanaka have all won places in the final and will go on to compete for the chance to become New Zealand’s first Gigatown.

The positive sides is that I am pleased with the finalists because all those places could do with a boost as they are relatively remote locations that are mainly good places for a holiday. I say relatively remote because it's an effort for most New Zealanders to get to them, four in the South Island and one on the East Cape. [PS I say good places for a holiday because Dunedin weather is not so good but the attractions are great.]

The negative side is that it is taking way too long to get a winner - one year between the 2013 and 2014 Labour Weekends - and the result will be a damp squib to most of us. I expect that Spark expected their profile to be enhanced as innovative, responsive and surefooted. But one year on - it's over a year since Gigatown was announced - I'm thinking 'yawn', (s)lumbering, and poorly directed.

Not now cos I have told them to switch me back to 30Mbs as I couldn't stand the burning smell!!
