I'm a gamer with a Vodafone VDSL connection. I stream stuff occassionally, but to be honest Idek what my broadband tops out at speed-wise since I've never checked. I care about my latency and ping times and if they're fine and Twitch doesn't buffer for days, them I'm cool. I don't get why speed is so important to a lot of (non-technical) people. For the Average Joe, faster broadband doesn't neccessarily mean it's better.

Now I live in an area with Cable (130/10) and it's awesome!! Now when I'm away I can VPN in to home and watch stuff on the NAS no sweat at all.

I would be surprised if your VPN speed was over 10Mbs.

Never tried to max it out. But I can easily stream 720p but do get buffering trying a full HD video. Most of the time I am connecting from a hotel hotspot so my speeds on that end isn't that good anyway, normally enough for a stream though. My router can more than hack it too.
Will try a speedtest tomorrow over 4G via the VPN when I'm back in the city tomorrow....

Like you I am on 130/10 cable, and use VPN more often than not.
International speeds (USA, UK) are of course variable, but download speeds of 100Mbps via VPN are often possible with multiple streams (using JDownloader).
I could live with 50/2 cable (just), but would prefer not to.
Downgrades are always painful. smile

Astril VPN, I get my max line speed to USA and Europe. 62Mb/s

How do you get 62MB/s when your [home] networks maximum upload is 10Mbs?

think you will find timA missread a little and assumed you were simply talking download speeds.

Heh,

10Mb/s up too.

Love the averagely poor Voda offshore capacity.

Couldn't care less. I feel sorry for people that post Speedtest results in their signature, like it's something to be proud of. Maybe if it's to a SpeedTest server in the States it is, but if it's not you're basically just showing your line speed. Which is, IMHO, embarrassingly lame.

That said, having Fibre at home is nicer than having ADSL, but really I doubt I'd notice that much if someone snuck in overnight and swapped it back.  I guess I'd notice the upload speed (10Mb instead of 1Mb) because makes working at home a lot nicer.

There's no doubt that for downloading a large file in a hurry, a bigger speed is better, especially for torrents (many small streams.)  But for day-to-day usage, it makes little to no difference.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Please forgive me for stating the obvious, but ...

You would notice a very big difference if you had than one user in your household, or if you needed to upload to a server.

If you just want to read your emails and surf a little, ADSL is OK.

Well, we have two users in our household. We used to sync at 4-5Mb/s.  We haven't really noticed any real difference except, as you rightly point out, in uploading files/photos/etc.  The only other difference is that our VoIP calls don't have any artifacts anymore, you used you get the odd bzzzt/click on ADSL (even with QoS enabled)

Ok yes, I think if you're getting speeds that poor you're going to care about speed! I should have stated that for me, the difference from 5/1 to 30/10 hasn't been one I notice very often.

We moved from 130/10 Cable in Wellington (shared with the neighbour via a bit of Cat5e strung between our houses), to 100/50 Orcon UFB here in Whanganui, to 30/10 Orcon UFB because I couldn't see the point of spending an extra $30/mo for speeds we almost never needed.

The only thing I miss from the 100/50 connection was the upstream speeds, and even then that's pretty minor.  We may switch back to 100/20 or 100/50 when my friend moves in over the road and we put a couple of Mikrotiks up to share the connection.  Or we might decide that we don't need the extra speed.

I guess that's the issue for me.  The higher speeds come at quite a price premium over ordinary unlimited 30/10 UFB + phone, and don't seem to make a noticeable difference to the internet experience we get, except for the small number of occasions someone is downloading a large file from a server that can actually fill our pipe.  Our telecomms spend is already $140/mo (unlimited UFB @ $99/mo, 2x $19 2degrees prepay packs, a few calls/etc), it doesn't need to get even higher.

fair point about not filling your pipe.

if most of your downloads came from a server which does fill your pipe however, would the extra speed be "worth it" to you?

Not at present.  I just don't download many large files these days.  The VPN to work can't fill my 30/10 pipe, and Google Hangouts only needs a few megabits each way -- I work from home so those two are the really important apps.  Netflix works fine on 30/10, even with several people streaming at once.

Im same not interested in changing plan. I save $60 a month over what I used to pay. Was cable 130/10 150gb now UFB 30/10 unlimited (Snap). 2 gamers (latency is same as was with TCL), much youtube streaming to tvs, ftp downloads. No way I see any need for faster. My Ftp downloads are just as fast on UFB as were on cable.
