Is the overloading of this cabinet recorded in the system somewhere - are the complaints and faults that have been logged with it got to the right place and the right people?

Do you know how many ADSL connections it has hosted off it and what uplink speed it has? Is there any way for the uplink connections to be upgraded (or more added) without complete replacement of the Alcatel 7300?

Where does it uplink back to? Cust Exchange?

It will add value - because while it may not change the upgrade speed. At least I would know that the right people are aware of the issue. Every time I ring (after a year of ringing ive pretty much given up now) They tell me there must be a fault with my house wireing and they will need to send someone out. I even took a day off work so they could send someone just to get it ruled out - and no one showed up but they did not bother telling me no one was coming any more.

So the feeling I get as a customer is that the fault & overloading is not correctly recorded/known and every time I seem to be starting from scratch.

I want to know the exact extent of the issue so I can better plan my options, is the problem not as bad as I thought? is it worse then I thought? Are there 40 people connected to the cabinet with room for 40 more to be connected? so going to get ALOT worse? Could the uplink be upgraded without a full cabinet replacement? which given what you are saying might be more realistic then replacement any time soon.

I'll pretty much summarise this thread (along with many others on here) in a brutally honest way.

If you're on an ATM based BUBA connection via ASAM or Conklin that isn't going to be upgraded as part of the RBI you're pretty much stuck with what you have now with very little chance of seeing an improvement. Your internet is only going to get worse over time.

The Commerce Commission seem to think Chorus are making too much money from UBA services so saw it fit to slash the pricing based on calculating wholesale costs from two countries and at no point ever considered speed as an input or factor in these calculations.

The real world reality is that it costs a lot more to provide rural services (where the vast majority of remaining ATM based ASAMs and Conklin's are) and upgrading this costs big $$$ - of which Chorus will never see a return on investment. With growing financial pressures on Chorus there is now very little chance of seeing any additional capex spent in such areas.

There are bottlenecks in some parts of the ATM network, but there is also 75kbps per user handover dimensioning in place for BUBA that Chorus offered to upgrade to 150kbps for free as part of the proposed Boost changes. My understanding right now is this will not be happening due to the Commerce Commission putting the breaks on the proposed changes to ADSL UBA services.

Moral of the story - be careful what you wish for in this world. Sometimes it can have severe consequences for others. Urban users fighting the "copper tax" campaign may see slightly cheaper naked broadband, but many other NZers will simply suffer a result.
