InstallerUFB:
The Grey Pilar is copper only (they may have done some copper replacement @ the same time as running the Ducting for the Fibre  / The Pit is again for your copper servicee)

I've noticed in Wellington that Chorus have gone all retro - these are now being used in new fibre builds.

yep you will find the stub end of a small multiway microduct (4/7/12 tube) stoped off inside a DP below a pole & sometimes @ ROW boundarys. The DP will be removed or cut off to allow for the mutiway to be joined and extended as required up the pole or down the ROW

At the moment, I happy that VDSL has become available at all.  I was becoming resigned to things being as good as they were going to get in the new future.  I spoke to a neighbor tonight who had been tinkering with his dead modem just before they got the cabinet back up and running, and he was convinced that it was something he'd done that had suddenly lifted his speed from 1.5Mb/s to the 16Mb/s he is now getting.  That would be some tweak!  It is also double my current download speed, but I 'think' he is with Orcon as opposed to us with Spark.

Could that be to do with the the points made in the link from the autoreply?
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/7872

I'm going to give up playing at guessing because I keep getting it wrong, and thing seem to be working out OK, so fair dos to Chorus. I think I'd be safer taking a 'black box' approach to it all.  Thanks for all the help guys.

Hey TLD
out of interest how long did it take from when the new cabinate was installed to you noticed your speed where faster???
I'm sitting here on a constant painfull .49mb up/down, they put in a new cab like 3 weeks ago but still no increase in speeds for me
Cheers

TLD: After years of ever slowing speeds (1.5Mb/s) Chorus upgraded our cabinet this week.  I had a chat with the Chorus guy, starting with 'I don't know what you've done, but our broadband is suddenly a lot faster'.   He asked for details, and was surprised when I said 6.5Mb/s.  He thought it would be more. We are 400m from the cabinet on a Spark 150Gb plan.

The Chorus guy actually said we'd be able to get VDSL, but when I phoned Spark the next day, that wasn't happening.  They managed to get an HG630b to me the very next day, but that only took us up to 7.4Mb/s and actually dropped the upload to .6Mb/s. (We were still using the original 604T) Upgrading the 630b firmware bought the upload to .85 with no effect on download speed.

So my question is, is it conceivable that Chorus would fit ADSL1 to a rural cabinet?  The 604t reported the connection as ADSL_2plus.  The 630b just says adsl.

Also, is it possible to find the same SNR, Attenuation, etc. stats on the 630b as I could with the 604T?  I did not record them, but AFAIR they were something like:

14 - 17
(can't remember) - 5
TX power -30

We are in Ashford Grove, Rapaura, 8km out of Blenheim.

Incidentally, it is more than two years since they ran the big green UFB cable right past my house up to the school at the end of our road, but there does not appear to be any plan to ever let us hook up to UFB.

TIA

No still has the same 7600 bit rate for down - only time we get that sort of speed is like 3am. The old cab is there still but as I said the new one has been sitting there for 3 weeks?

It was instant. The connection dropped at 9am, and was back around midday with the speed increase.  It took two days for Spark to show Ultra VDSL as available, which I immediately signed up for with the unlimited plan (ISTM that you can burn through a lot of data at those speeds — even with the current 7.4Mb/s we are hovering up bandwidth like there's no tomorrow.)

Another reason we didn't hesitate to go with VDSL is the upload speed.  As I noted up the thread, when my wife swamped the connection uploading full res images for a photo book, my downloads stalled almost completely.

I'm still wondering why my neighbor is getting 16Mb/s to our 7.4Mb/s.  He is closer to the cabinet as the crow flies, but his cable run has to be longer.

Sounds like your on an ADSL1 profile, and your neighbour is on an ADSL2 profile..

New HG630b delivered next day from Spark.
No master splitter.  Is that something that will be sorted as part of the VDSL installation?

Yes, A master filter should be installed as part of your VDSL installation.

Rapaura is 8km north west of Blenheim, right in the heart of the main vine growing area.  Rapaura road is SH62.  The cabinet is on the corner of Rapaura Road and Hammerichs Road.  I live on the corner of Ashford Grove 400m south of the cabinet.
