sbiddle: Being on an ISAM there is very little chance of being port waiters in the area. The fact all of Whitby has UFB would make this even less likely.

As pointed out though a transition won't disconnect the broadband, merely move it between providers, so there is no chance of losing the connection.

Sorry to hijack this, but Whitby has UFB already? Am moving their in April and the Chorus maps says it's not due till Sep 2015. None of the ISP's list Whitby as having UFB available yet (that I can see).

Do you know something extra :-)

Just looking on the Chorus map it says yes but when using Snap map it says no.

Not sure where you're looking but Whitby was one of the first areas in Wellington get UFB, and has had it for close to 3 years now. Ascot Park and pockets of Paremata don't have UFB yet, but certainly all of Whitby does.

Any of the 20 or so (last time I looked) RSPs that have a handover in the Wellington handover area can offer services in Whitby.

Bugger, looks like I'm moving to a pocket of Whitby that doesn't have UFB (Staithes Drive South).

Still, September this year isn't that far away. Typically how long is it after the fibre is in before ISP's start offering service?

Yep,

realistically the only way losing the connection might happen is if the customer contacts the existing ISP and requests a disconnection before they have a confirmed date from the new ISP.

(And even then, as you pointed out, the chances of Whitby having port waiters is very small anyway)

As has been previously mentioned in this thread it is vital that the customer does not ask their current ISP to disconnect their broadband. The gaining ISP - the new one that you are signing up to -will take care of everything for you and notify the losing ISP - your current broadband provider - of the churn.

While that is so, it is terrible advice to not inform your current ISP that you are moving since the majority of ISP's have the sneaky 30-day notice period clause, and will charge you an additional 30 days if you churned to another ISP without giving them a disconnection date.
