Because your number would not be native to your new exchange, and hence the exchange can not support it. Call 123 and ask them for yourself.

can telecom accept requests for 09950xxxx (vfx auckland numbers) to be ported to them or can only numbers which were initially issued by telecom be ported back to telecom?  and is this the case for all exchanges or only some?

Yes, most exchanges can accept 099 numbers. When I say native I am refering to Telecom number ranges, i.e. 09535 could not be ported to an exchange that uses the 09636 prefix etc, but an 099 number could be if the exchange support this.

This of course all may change with the introduction of the NGN, but time will tell on that one.
