Ah I see. Then yes, that would make a difference. Wonder if they'll keep it running then.
And I do recall all the regions were able to bid for that Project Probe thing. From memory (then-)Telecom won most of them, except for Southland, Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland - I think?

I think woosh got southland, pacific.net got nelson and telecom was everywhere else after woosh pulled out of a few of the other regions it had won.

FTR - my experience with Woosh Wireless wasn't that great. I found the signal inside my house was initially okay and usable, but eventually became quite poor (despite being on top of a hill in Milford, on the North Shore) and it would drop quite often. Tolerated it for about 3-4 months, by which point I had had enough and went back to JetStart. It was a lot slower, but at least it was a hell of lot more reliable.
A pity, as I quite liked the faster speed of Woosh, but even with the booster antenna at my place the signal just wasn't strong enough to use.
Funnily enough, their support line said (from memory) the signal was poor due it having to travel from Takapuna across Lake Pupuke! Funny how that didn't seem to affect it for the first month or so.

Do they still offer wireless service outside of Southland?

I used to use Woosh at University (Auckland) when internet was $70 per GB. It was really slow with mega high latency and would drop out constantly...

We have used Woosh Wireless since 2005. 10 years of okay but also cheap service. Have called Woosh and they say Slingshot will offer the same deal we have now for the same price albeit on a fixed line. Introductory Email "Update about your broadband" from Slingshot offered plans from $56 so a lot higher than the $45 we pay now for 2 lines and 10GB broadband. Hope they come back with a matching deal when they phone us.

Hey everyone,

I currently use Woosh Wireless on a live aboard boat based in the Viaduct Marina, downtown Auckland CBD.
With Woosh handing over service to Slingshot I have been left a bit in the dark as to what options I have.

I have looked into the RBI option but due to the mobile nature of a boat, the directional antenna won't be suitable.
Mobile board band plans on Vodafone and Spark will not match the 20Gb plan that I am currently on.
I have a better mobile data plan on my phone but hot spotting will not work as I have a LAN connected printer and storage.

I am at a loss of what to do.
Any ideas?
Any help would be great!

Waiting to hear back from them. So far the only email communication has advised that the Woods Wireless service will be ending.

I'm in the same boat as you are, i've been with them for 6 years and as i'm mobile all over Auck. As far as i know, woosh is keeping the southland wireless going but all other areas are being shut down, however, i wonder what happens to the modem that is supplied by woosh when i signed up...The woosh head office is on railside ave at new market, i tried to get hold of them to find out if the office is still there or is it closed, if so, what are we suppost to do with the modem/s????.

I would say that woosh are the underdogs from the big boys trying to stump out competition...woosh wireless does have alot of potential in the near future, the day will come when copper will suck and having wireless is that you dont have to worry about landline cables breaking or getting damaged by water...

The problem is, Woosh's offerings were surpassed by copper/fibre offerings a long time ago IMO. Hell, even 3G and 4G mobile broadband is a bit quicker.

3G and 4G are much much quicker, but their data bundles are way too small to make it a viable alternative.

Unfortunately you've got things the wrong way around. Wireless does not, and never will replace fixed infrastructure. It will always be a complementary offering.

Woosh could built a killer LTE network, but the simple fact is nobody in the world would do this because the business case simply doesn't stack up.

I am Woosh Wireless customer - have been for 9 years

Slingshot tell me they are not buying Woosh customers - they are only providing with ongoing services.

Slingshot tell me they can not help me as I have no Fixed wires in my home.

This is rental home. Have approached LL and sent Electrician round to only tell me there is no ETP. No copper wire/line from street to house here in Orakei, Auckland!! A bit backward for this day in age.

Hence why I went with Woosh 9 years ag for phone and broadband.

No other wireless ISP is operating here in Orakei except for Compass Communications Ltd for a WOOPING $250 joining fee!! And for how long who only knows - now that woosh are down scaling their out dated equipment Compass will probably do the same.

3G & 4G doggles are so expensive for the amount of data you get - not an option.

Woosh wont return there calls to me now. Or emails.

Dose any one out there have any ideas as to what I can do??

A bit off topic and I suggest you create your own topic. Just because there's no cable from street to house it doesn't mean you can't get a landline service - check your address https://www.chorus.co.nz/network-upgrade-map and if there's service in your street then what you need to do is sign up for fixed broadband, have consent from your landlord and Chorus will do a full install, which will be charged to your broadband account on the first month.
