Thanks, as this is meant to be the dream family home for the next 20 years, I guess we'll just have to sit tight on wireless for now and see what happens. We recently got a notice that our property will become residentially zones too (the other side of the road already is, so I might just have to wait a year or 5, until the next schmo pays for the lines on my side of the road, or the distribution fibre going past my fence gets split somewhere closer and they offer services to me too \_o_/

Unfortunately, an extra $2500 at this point would mean sacrificing furniture for Internet, so not an option 'for now'... Will look up the wireless operators, or multipack on Skinny in increments of 60gb (till this expands if we lucky)

Unfortunately, unless the next schmo is your immediate next door neighbour, the terminal won't be cut in on the boundary, which'll leave you in the same place you are now (except maybe the cable will run past your house now, which'll reduce costs by like at most a grand, although that's a guestimate and not reflective, not views of employer, yada yada).

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

toejam316: All I can recommend is you look into offerings from Vodafone and Telecom, as well as Primo, Lightwire and all the other wireless providers if you want a cheap install - because you won't be getting anything done below 4 digits from Chorus, and if an LFC isn't in your area, and you want Fiber, Chorus will charge you a pretty penny (more than copper, certainly).

Light wire rural seems to be ok, address checker liked me and $110/300gb with $100 install... Now to see what service might be like :)

pffft steve jobs never had furniture, but i bet he had internet :) i bet most geeks would probably choose internet over furniture, i certainly would, no contest (i need my netflix).

Lol, but I'm married with two kids, and SWMBO won't accept our 15yo lounge suite (donated by my parents 10 years back) just to have copper to the door 😝

We don't even want or need a landline, as mobile has been just fine now we're in a decent signal location, so can't even play the 'to ring your mum/sister' card anymore :P

toejam316: Yep, I do a fair bit of build work and from what I've heard from customers, depending on what the job requires, it often ranges in the low 4 figures, depending on the extent of work. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a like it or lump it situation, as Chorus now charges the entire cost of installation to the end user, as the Copper network is now seen as legacy, soon to be made redundant. If you're in a UFB area, talk to the LFC about your options through them, but I've got a feeling you'll be coughing up the funds or toughing it out for a few months minimum on mobile data/skinny broadband.

I assume you mean only in places where fibre is available, right? How long is "soon"? After the fibre rollout is completed?

No time frames or anything has been set, but Chorus have changed how faults are handled, and the general rumble seems to be that by the time UFB Phase 1 is complete, they'd like to begin phasing out Copper in those completed areas, if not sooner. Some of the things suggested have included once 70% of a street becomes UFB, the other 30% will be force migrated to UFB and the Copper removed/deactivated. I'm unsure as to if they'll decommission the copper entirely in RBI areas, I haven't read or heard anything to confirm or deny that.

Same here for Auckland council.

Although I question whether this rule has to be updated at some point. Some people may choose to go wireless.

Mine was subdivided in the 80's so they didn't have the same rules then, which is why I bought the section and then still had to put in the water and power. Seeing phone lines running along the other side of the street, I didn't think copper would be a problem, expecting a $200-300 bill for swinging it overhead to my side pole.

Tuakau is not and RBI or Fibre area, so my address seems simply SOL :(

Luckily I'm not quite as far out as I we in Glenbrook Beach, so am in range for cellular or wifi options, just peeved that I'm in range of VDSL but the connection cost is unexpectedly (my own naivety maybe) higher than my build budget allows.

I've queried what the cost is actually for and waiting to hear back, seems a lot of money to punt on hopefully having a good connection

Since chorus dont have any techs/installers on there payroll, it all gets contracted out to visionstream who then hire contractors to do the actual work. $1000 will go to chorus for their admin fees then $1000 will go to visionstream for their admin fees and the installer would be lucky to see $600 for his work.

I think the cost would still be the same $2600 even to swing it over to a pole, know a guy on waiheke who was in the same boat the chorus quote was the same price to swing it over to a pole that was on the same side of the road as he was.
