Ash

For your interest the Compass Wireless product works really well with VFX (low latency). I have the WRTP54G (cheapest is $156 from pricespy). We are on the 5 GB capped plan for $50 per month. I think the plans have changed slightly since we joined (we use around 2.5 GB of data with the VFX) and $11.25 for VFX totals $62ish each month. The install was $250. I suppose the issue is line-of-sight with Sugerloaf.

Cheers.

Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Thanks for the info Matt. It seems like there are a number of providers of these types of services, but I've found there is a real lack of detailed information on the net (e.g. Scorch website, WxC Xtencity website). It's hard enough to find who actually offers these types of services, let alone find information about their products (speed, availability, technology used, prices), short of calling them. While I realise calling isn't a huge deal for most people, these days I would expect a much better online presence from these providers if they are serious about getting new subscribers.

Hear Hear!

It's almost as if they can't be bothered given that the number of possible subscribers is small.  However, as all of us on Wireless Broadband are aware, you are paying big $$$ for any of these plans so I would have thought it would be worth their while to publicise their offerings in a decent manner.

Mobile broadband via EVDO Rev a is a serious option for users with in 30 - 40 k  from a major town with the service (75% of pop and growing)

For example in The Mid Canterbury the local Dealership sell an Air card 595 USB card a Yagi 9 or 12 db directional antenna and have an antenna install on the roof etc pointing at one of the 3 sites in the Ashburton.  I know they have clients in some pretty out of the way locatons getting broadband speeds of 250kbps down and a little bit less up 35+km from one of the 3 EVDO sites in Ashburton.

The local store has been selling this as a rural broadband solution against Farmside Sat. and what was Xtra Wireless, very succesfully, hence Ashburton has very high through puts of data compared to other centres.

I am hearing talk of EVDO being expanded in the future to all sites which could make it a competitor offering for rural customers againsts Sat and Wireless. Data plans will need to be changed but it is entirely possible that a large amount of rural broadband users could be supplied via EVDO Rev A, B or C in the near future until some thing better is available.

Compass (and their wholesalers) use 3.5GHz signal that is predecessor to WiMax and MUST have line of sight to their base station. Hope they will be moving to WiMax for new sites in future! Its real broadband, low latency, and cheaper than Telescum because its not a 3G mobile product. I'm sure there will be no problem getting VoIP over the connection since VoIP is not cecessarily related to the connection provider. Check it out, not sure if Compass still do VoIP like Wired Country used to, but if you want everything on the same phone bill then I guess why not.

Most providers dont advertise Kordia wireless because sooooo over priced, but obviously Orcon are now owned by Kordia. Woosh is essentially 3G mobile, so will never be comparable to broadband.

If any other provider is doing Wifi then you might get a cheaper service again, but potentially more laggy and susceptible to congestion.

Time to find a new industry!

Thanks, i might need a new keyboard that refuses to make those kind of mistakes. Also please note that Wired Country service is 3.5GHz radio, not MHz...
