Your mistaking cable for UFB, It is no UFB.

at only a 1080p feed at 30fps, your hardly going to be maxing a 10mbit link nevermind a 20mbit link. You will however have more space in your bandwidth to cut out jitter caused by your own usage.

Getting off Vodafones cable network in particular will certainly improve your experience.

The advantage you do have with dealing with the US timezone is your likely to be doing any video streaming outside of peak and thus less affected by the issues.

On my Vodafone bill its called Unlimited Ultra Fast Cable 130, I was one of the first to get the what used to be called Warp Speed it is from the CISCO DCP3008 square moden, which now gives me

about 95mbps down and, 10 mbps Upload on a speed test in Wellington is this not UFB? so is my connection faster than the UFB?

Nope. In fact, in peak time (as hio77 mentions) it will be markedly slower.

Nope, cable is not UFB.

it providers an alike service, but it should not be called UFB.

Vodafone have simply caused a big confusion for customers here, The two networks are very different. One all isps can support, the other a Single isp owns and uses.

The biggest downfall being Vodafone simply cant offer the higher upstream and downstream rates currently available on real UFB With their existing infrastructure. - Im ignoring any congestion in this statement and purely commenting on Headline rates.

By the same example of being able to get 100/10 on cable, surely a 100/50 VDSL connection should count as UFB too right?

If you bill states your still on the 130 plan, Realistically you should still be getting the 130/10 profile.

I feel sorry for a poor customer who only reads the UFB headline, assumes they have UFB and not cable and tries to sign up to another ISP. They will have a poor customer experience in their opinion ild bet, being stuck in the argument of no i already have UFB when it might not even be in the area! - Its not on the customer to really know the difference between cable and fibre.

To be fair, Ultra Fast Cable or Ultra Fast Broadband? Its not that obvious actually.

UFC is copper based cable, UFB is fibre optic cable (light)

So, basically Vodafone have been squeezing every last $ out of my pocket to help there profits ( since they own the cable line )

and the Vodafone retention department last year at this time last year told me this was the fastest the could offer me, hmmm

so, even fibre at 100 down and 20 upstream would kick my connection in the butt for what I want to do with it mostly and stream my video to the states,

It probably is the fastest they can offer you, they won't sell you fibre in a cable area (as you say).

Vodafone no-longer sell the higher plans, so yeah its the fastest they can offer.

Vodafones retention team is there to do their job, That is to Retain customers. If a little white lie pulls that off and leaves you feeling happy to sign another contract for a few dollars of hey! they have won the battle!

The exception is their gigatown offering, which is over UFB. Which if memory serves right they were actually really late to the party.

Realistically UFB is available to you, an isp (Vodafone included) could provide you 1000/500 with ease be it rather costly.

Remember that "warp speed" and "ultrafast broadband" are marketing terms only, and are best ignored.

Why not order fibre (with another provider) and get it installed while leaving your cable connection running? Once you're happy with your fibre connection, you can ditch cable....forever!!!

in my experience what ISP you use can vary performance to Comcast, Verizon, etc, ... home users quite significantly, and yet it's hard to run a speed test to these.. if you pick "well connected" speed test servers, these may have better speeds than where you actually want to connect to.

with voice and video conferencing usually bandwidth isn't as much of an issue as packet loss which is often worse during peak time congestion. with connections to the US this can actually be during US peak rather than NZ peak.

One thing to remember is that Spark no longer have a transparent proxy which mangles web browsing to HTTP sites (not HTTPS). Vodafone still have them in play from my understanding when I last checked a few weeks ago.

They caused no end of problems at Spark and was quite happy when they were taken out.

That could very much be impacting any time sensitive HTTP traffic. The web conference system may be HTTP. Skype isn't but I know a lot of off the shelf systems do.

Vodafone seem to a be slightly selective with where their fingers poke, but indeed it is there.

Its my understanding cable still has their full proxy farm still on it though...

Sorry for the belated reply,

Finally made the jump! signed up with Spark, cause they had a great deal for Fibre! (said it will take around 3-5 weeks for the install)

so my 12 month Vodafone contract runs out on the 29 April (this month) =) so should I not tell them im switching yet and just pay the extra month starting on the 29 April to 29 May ( price of bill will more than likely go up for that month? correct? since I am out of contract!, but i've read alot of ISP companies

you need to give them 30 days notice for disconnecting services so if I don't let them know for another 4 weeks now, then will I have to pay for 29 April -29 May and 29- May to 29 June? 2 extra months?

because I have Telephone/Broadband and Sky with Vodafone .. could I cancel my Sky TV on the 29th April so I don't get charged extra month for that also? or would they need 30 days notice for TV also?

( most likely will be signin up with SKY Tv directly next couple weeks )

Thanks for all the great replies over the last week and helping me make the right decision and move to Fibre =)
