I think you're overestimating how enthusiastic all the RSPs are to install their own OLTs.

 

I never said anything about RSPs... But existing LFCs or a new player on the market with different colours on the GPON with new ONTs that support different colours. Plus a new optical splitter on the OLT end then having backhaul to a new CO. Then you would just need to swap out the ONTs and insert a new splitter on the OLT and you would be done. I suspect the smaller LFCs may be greatly worried if Chorus decide to follow that path.

 

Could be completely wrong here as all of the above is pure speculation.

Now you're really throwing the cat among the pigeons suggesting that come 2020 Chorus will deploy their kit in non Chorus areas to provide service.

 

We all know that this could well happen, but you're not supposed to discuss it in public. smile

I would be really happy to have 2 totally separate fiber networks past the house.

 

At the moment my 2 VDSL connections are both running off the same cabinet. Not really a huge amount of redundancy there.

 

When I finally get fiber, it will be 2 ONTs going probably back thru the same splitter to the same thing at the telco end. Again, no real redundancy there.

 

If there was 2 LFCs then it would be totally independent - much more desirable.

Why have two fibre connections? You don't really have a diverse connection, they go through same fibre cab and CO, so you would still be victim to the most common fibre fault - dig events. Who cares what splitter/OLT it goes to if some keen roadworker chucks a digger through the fibre.

 

If you want diversity, path diversity is key. VDSL + fibre would be much better surely.

From experience, the biggest problems are ISP's screwing up or doing upgrades, second is optical lights going red when a chorus person stuff up working on the network installing someone else.

 

First is solved with 2 totally separate ISPs, second by hoping to get the connections on separate splits, which I have been told there is absolutly no way of ensuring happens with the chorus installs.

 

VSDL will not be around for very long after fiber is completed I expect, ultimately 4G is the final backup but it is not a second connection that can be used all the time due to no unlimited options.
