raytaylor:

What happens if you take the antenna off and just use the internal antenna of the modem?

You can position the modem in the window and run ethernet cabling to another modem that can provide the wifi.

Both internal (with the modem in front of the window) and external antenna do the same thing. sometimes connecting to 256 and everything happy, others to 258 and everything goes wobbly.

coffeebaron:

Also try mount antenna on a 45 degree angle, or use two antennas

I tried 45 degrees and the noise went up, but i will try it again and see whether both cells behave.

I don't mind the switching as long as I can get data through reliably. Last night the modem connected to 258 and went to 3G only but wouldn't get a data connection. I needed to restart the modem, it connected to 256 and everything was happy.

coffeebaron: Looks like your on the cusp of two sectors. Perhaps try antenna on other side of house shielded from Hunua and aim for Ararimu.

I'll ask vodafone to rotate the mast by 60 degrees, should put me dead center ;)
