It's all well and good to upgrade the cabinets, but Chorus also need to improve the copper lines going out from the upgraded cabinets.

My local cabinet (Okoia) was upgraded 3 years ago, but only 3 houses along my road currently have ADSL. The main reason being loading coils.

I've talked to several Chorus line repair guys, and they've all said they don't get paid to remove loading coils... so they won't remove them!

That's really interesting.

To be fair it's been a while now since I've worked on the Chorus network properly, but the it used to go was we got the order to run jumpers in the exchange/cabinet to get the DSL hooked up. That didn't work as there was loading coils on the pair group. So then a 'FB' service ordered was issued for us to go out an fix it. We were just provisioning tech's so sometimes we couldn't get the customer off the loading coils right away (we didn't carry proper jointing kit etc, but sometimes the coils were just on the feeder side of a cross-connect cabinet and only on a small group) but the process was to simply send it to 'Cable' and one of the cable guys (maybe even @InstallerUFB ??) went and sorted it.

without a doubt yes!

when i somehow had adsl through a loading coil, oh what a pain that was... 64/64 when it worked! atleast the phone worked though...

Yep loading coils are only removed on request (grooming of cable network to allow for xDSL connections) if required - No request from a RSP via a Service Order then they aren't removed

BTW - this also applies for multiples on the cable network (cable grooming can be requested)

Spark tried to get Chorus to remove my coil. After 3 weeks the Chorus response was they may investigate its removal later that year.

The phone lines run for 2kms across our farm, so I often see the Chorus techs when they're out here fixing faults. When I ask about the coils they all say the same thing... they don't get paid to remove loading coils.

I was just really lucky. One of the Chorus guys saw my coil in a junction box beside the cabinet (hut) when he was fixing another fault, so he took pity on me and snipped it off.

What was the purpose of loading coils anyway? Something to do with voice services, pre-internet?

They were put on long lines to stop voice getting distorted over the distance (something about the capacitance of the twisted pair over the distance of the pair) - I'm not an electrical engineer lol.
But they basically form a low pass filter so all the vast majority of the DSL signals get filtered out by them.

I am really surprised to here people having issues getting them removed. It was never much of an issue.

Multiples on the other hand deliver were often issues. Especially with VDSL. In the early days of VDSL (probably 2009-10ish I suppose) it was easy to get a cable fault man out to clean the cable up but once the big ISPs started doing it that got harder and harder.

I went quite a way trying to get multiples removed and the answer constatnly came back as being a no way from them. Wouldnt even give me an indicitive cost to have them look into it.

One conklin is too many. Hopefully that change to allow them to add fiber to the power cable accessways will get rid of all the craptastic E1 backhaul soon enough and they can put real gear in for all those poor suffering people.

Problem is that you can replace the conklin and give it a fiber backhaul, but the copper isnt very good beyond 3kms anyway - and so it helps very few people.

And if your neighbour has an electric fence anywhere near the trunk cable, its definitley not going to be very good at all
