Once upon a time, the post office decided that they didnt want to run these big expensive heavy cables out into the wopwops.

Running a telephone line over 5kms gets tedious and voice quality suffers.

So the PCM pair gain system was invented - in NZ these are usually Alcatel systems.

A digital PCM system of a few pairs which carried 2mbits for 2kms, would then be repeated every 2kms until it gets to one of these white cabinets.

At the white cabinet, the digital 2mbit signal is converted back into analog lines, which could then go 5kms from that cabinet.

One day I found one left with a broken lock and the door was slightly open - didnt want water to get inside it so I got a ratchet strap out of the car and wrapped it around the cabinet to keep it closed. Took a photo while I was at it.

Some of these cabinets had space, or another one was positioned next to them for a conklin dslam which would have been installed under project Probe.

They typically had a 2mbit ATM backhaul going back to the exchange, and the dslam split that up into 12-32? standard ADSL lines.

This a new subdivision at the end of the Glenbrook Peninsula which has had fibre run to it, Chorus have now upgraded the non broadband cabinet servicing Glenbrook Beach to support broadband with ADSL 2+ and VDSL both being orderable.

(Purple VDSL, Orange ADSL 2+ and Green NGA (UFB))

I remember seeing that area on the coverage maps (all the purple ones) and was always surprised it had no broadband whatsoever as there are a fair few houses out there.  Good to see it's finally happened.

Often you would also have Conklins in them rather than ASAMs. I was fairly certain that all the Nokia DSLAMs were removed years ago and only the Alcatel 7300 ASAMs remained.

@raytaylor that photo brings back memories of the Telecom/Spark NIL.

i have to say, it's very stratifying to read notifications and see "Conklin to be removed"
