Well I decided to give VDSL another go - as suspected it doesn't seem to have improved at all. After having a bit of fun getting the Edgerouter to authenticate (turns out I had to first create a virtual interface over the correct Eth interface with VLAN10, then setup the pppoe interface over that.

I think that answers my original question anyway, haha.

Just migrated to VDSL, provided by Digital Clout, to replace my Voda ADSL. Router is a Draytek Vigor 130. Looks like I'm on the edge like this user. After playing around with the snr, setting it to -50 improves download speed from 12.4Mb/s to 18Mb/s, but upload speed is pretty constant at 360Kb/s

Obviously this is a bit worse than my ADSL connection, which is sad. Is there anything else I can do? Replace cables, filters, other tweaks in the Draytek?

Upstream speed normally is internal wiring for the most part.

Remember snr tweaking is at your own risk. With ddDLM on the linr it is very likely inital gains will be lost as it returns you to a stable rate by its conditional.

Thanks for that. Being a newbie, where can I get that decoded? Would it be best to reset my SNR to 0 ( and sacrifice 5Mb/s upload speed ) to retrieve it and more in a couple of weeks, and is there anything I can do to improve the wiring ( rip out the dedicated sky socket, as it's next? )

Cheers,

Steve

There's the clue! I'd suggest getting a master filter installed. It'll cost a couple of hundred if you can't DIY and 30ish if you can. It basically bypasses all your internal wiring and gives a dedicated modem outlet. Essentially most phone wiring was only ever designed for voice frequencies, and doesn't cope well with the high frequencies of xDSL. Some of the extra phone sockets installed by Sky installers are notorious for poor xDSL performance.

As @hio77 says - sort the internal wiring before screwing with noise margin. DLM will override your changes with time anyway.

@coffeebaron may be able to help with a master splitter instal in Auckland / Waikato.

EDIT: Did get da spelling bad

So it's arrived, faster than the speed of light. Does it need to be installed in the telecom box on the outside wall, with the 3 bladed screws?
