We are in Nelson. We got our ONT installed in the middle of the upper level of two story house, exactly where we wanted for no extra cost (added about 10m to the fibre run).

We had initially been told a 'back to back' install was the only free option, regardless of suitability.

They (Chorus subcontractor Transfield) had mucked us around a lot, so I think they were keen to look after us .... or perhaps they were just happy to be rid of me

When fibre is ready to go, you'll probably get snail mail addressed 'to the householder' from a few ISPs inviting you to sign up to fibre with them.

They generally don't run the cable "through" walls, rather "on" the walls. They will put the ONT near an existing power plug, they won't modify or add to your mains wiring.

The design team may not show up at all, and the installer may completely ignore the plan that the design team negotiated with you. Even if easily accessible, they may not run the cable through the ceiling space, basement or under floor cavity unless you specifically ask/demand.

You can generally count on the job being as cheap and nasty as possible, and no extra miles to be gone. The conscientiousness and profession pride of the installers play a big part in this of course and it varies from region to region.

In West Auckland the install teams are very rough and do a job far inferior to what you'd be happy to pay for if you hired a sparky to do it. I'm fairly sure the Chorus sub contractors were general labourers, with no cabling experience at all - my place was a bit of disaster and I know people who have intervened in the job to achieve acceptable quality.

Enable will actually drop a box of Weet-Bix on your doorstep and provide you with a real life Fibre to the Home experience.

I simply monitored Enable's website for availability. ISP's site said not available so I used chat to initiate order. Order process appeared to go nowhere so I emailed CSR after 1 month. Again it went nowhere. I happened to be at home two weeks later (1 in 10 year event) and ISP called asking me the question, I said there should be a service order already placed, there wasn't. I was offered $100 credit. Incorrect plan was ordered. Took 24 days from that point with problems caused by concrete cutter being sick and phone connection being ignored due to inability to connect fibre at scheduled time. Phone sorted in one week but only after emails to Enable and contractors and reporting as a fault to ISP as another appointment with Enable contractor is not offered. Of course the contractor called my landline number for a week even though no call diversion in place. Static IP carry over went into blackhole, I was given misleading info by CSR and not knowing the static blocks simply believed what I was told. In the end, 3 weeks later, I was told to order the address via the webpage. I wasn't impressed by any of it.

The Fibre is generally run through at least one wall to get it inside the house. But once inside it's surface runs - probably not concealed by any form of conduit or capping. We agreed to surface runs because they were in the garage and upstairs cupboard.

Different local contractors will vary but in our case they said we would have to supply power to their preferred ONT installation point. They suggested a ~9m extension cord run from an outlet above the workbench.

Fortunately we managed to devise a better ONT location and in the end we had an outcome we were happy with.

ohh my !!!

fibre in my area is coming in Jan 2018 (according to chorus)

it means atleast 6 months more wait !!?!
