I have a similar set up to the OP, except with a regular double-plug and a 15-metre phone extension cable with modem on the end.
Plugging the modem directly into the jack (nothing but modem) did not have any noticable affect upon sync rate or stats (maybe 100kbps inc. from 3800kb to 3900kb, no change in attenuation - 41db both places) when compared to at the end of the exension, in a double-plug with a filtered phone directly in the jack.

Around a week ago, my sync rates were over 5500kb.

Any ideas as to possible causes and/or solutions?

Yea thanks for your help cyril7 and webwat.
Thanks to you I am now getting download speeds of up to 620KB/s !! I used to only get 400KB/s and my sync speed is now 5600 much better!
But I am still going to get that Linksys router/modem which will hopefully bring my speed up a bit more. And last off if Orcon still hasn't got any good plans for me at the end of next month then ill be switching ISPs too.

We spent most of this morning changing our setup a bit and it looks like I can keep my 600KB/s speed even with all the phone connected, YAY.

Ill add some photos latter if you like....

From personal experience, I would recommend against a Linksys modem.
On my line, (was 42db attenuation, around 3km from exchange), the Linksys I had consistantly dropped the connection when a download persisted, at over 600kBps, for more than a couple of seconds. Because of this, I returned the modem and was given a replacement, which had the exact same issue.

Now, I own an RTA1025W and it only drops when I pull out the cable Wink

What linksys did you have?
I am planning on getting a WAG325N

And my friend has a Dynalink but his doesn't work all to great so I wont be getting a Dynalink.

My netgear works fine, never drops out (only some times when it's really hot) it just has a lowish sync rate.

I had a WAG54G v3. The same issue was evident in the v1 and v2, and all other modem-routers based upon this (WAG200G, WAG54GP2 for instance).

Although I have heard many people saying their Dynalink modems are dodgy, almost every time someone asks about a good modem/router, someone (often many) will suggest the RTA1025W. It runs cooler and far more stable than the Linksys.

The reason Linksys' sync high is because they sacrifice stability for speed. Unless you're very close (<1km) to an exchange, you're probably going to be worse off.

However, If you're really intent on trying a Linksys, I'd recommend you check if you can test it or if the company you're buying off has a good returns policy. Then if it is unstable, you can return it for a refund.

Yea i'll do that, I just want to see if it gets any faster, if not then oh well ill go back to my netgear.

Technoguy glad you got it sorted.

Detruire, a critical part of what I asked Technoguy to do was to connect the modem as close as possible to the demarc (1st phone jack is normally the most convienient) and remove all wiring from that jack by taking the wires off the rear of the jack that go to the rest of hte house wiring, so no other house wiring is connected to the line.

Just disconnecting all phones from the jacks is not sufficient. Using a central filter at the demarc or 1st jack will replicate the same situation, as the filter will effectivly isolate all the reflections from the house wiring in the DSL band. If you want to site your DSL modem other than the 1st jack (or demarc) then run a clean cable (or derive a clean pair from the existing cabling) directly to the DSL modem.

This creates a level of isolation that multiple DSL micro filters can not achieve and is the common most reason for poor sync speeds as relating to house wiring.

There is only a one jack in this house.

Oh, ok, just needed to clarify.

Regarding your recent 5.5M > 3.9M sync, have you checked what mode your modem is syncing to, it could be that the DSLAM has been upgraded to an ISAM and set for ADSL2+ but your line length, modem or initial line profiles might be an issue.

It has been set to force to G.DMT for some time since forcing a mode makes it sync quicker. However, I did recently try enabling only the two ADSL2 modes, but it failed to sync within 10 minutes.Frown

The only other thing I noticed at the time was that the attenuation dropped from 44 or 45db to a solid 41.
