Please can we stop with these obscure "anyone use this ISP" threads? Internet is cheap so my recommendation is not to pick an ISP that claims to be the cheapest and instead, treat it like an essential service in your home.

Voyager or BigPipe if you're wanting a "cheap" ISP with good speeds and support and a free path to upgrade to UFB in the future.

I agree. Fibre is a consumable. It just works. Like a toaster. If you want more toast, better quality toast and hardware, better service, and so on, you line up all these boxes, including price and pull the trigger.

hio77:

Speed, Reliability and cost.

You can't get all 3 in a single provider.

This reminds me of a sign that hung on the wall of my chosen mechanic for many years:

Please choose one of the following:

A good cheap job, but it won't be quick.

Year 2018 was the last post.

Is anyone using Econofibre who can report their experience here?

Im a tad sick of suppliers who dangle a carrot, then a year later rack the charges up. No contract option seems attractive.

Thanks for any comments by users of Econofibre.

Later; I found these reviews on Broadbandcompare:

Don't be fooled by the low prices. This is the worst support I've ever seen. I've been trying to contact them for 5 months (!) to fix a slow connection issue (actual 11 Mbps vs 70 Mbps in the contract), and they take days to answer just blahblahblah and nothing actually happens. They don't have a physical address, no telephone to call. And things get even worse: they store our passwords in plain text! This is simply unacceptable.

2018

Edward 1.0
the worst company I ever used. No support at all. Stay away from them!

I've been using Econofibre's VDSL service for the past couple of months now and have been very happy with them. Such a massive improvement over my previous ISP's (Trustpower) woeful speeds and service.

1 good out of 3.

Al.

The top review you quoted there sounds like a customer that was sold vdsl "up to 70mbit" and took that as the rate.

No direct experience, but personally, if they can't be bothered to check spelling and grammar on their 3 page website, I'd question how much effort they're putting in to providing a service. Also pretty dubious claims about 'best' all over it, with no qualification of how that was determined.

Ive found another: www.hotshot.nz

User Comment: I've found Hotshot offers $69 a month for unlimited fibre, can use my own modem, open term and only $29 to sign up.

My comment: they dont charge a connection fee now and their site is much more professional than econofibre. They are listed on broadbandcompare.co.nz

Iv'e used them in the past not that long ago, Its the sister company to worldnet. Just like bigpipe to spark, I found the guys had fairly good contact no issues with customer service online only support if you know how to setup a router ect then no issues,

Back when I was with them they used feenix communications as the transit provider, I really liked feenix good peering and plenty of bandwidth I could happly max out my gig connection with p2p.

I see they now use Devoli rather then feenix, Again Devoli is really good as well, As for the local speed and backhaul they had no issues. Only issue i had was streaming twitch became poor quality for a little while about 2 weeks then they got onto of that issue.

Sorry; you talking about hotshot or econofibre?

It makes a lot of sense to me if one can get no contract at similar price to contract.

How long were you with them for, and any comments about ease of joining, billing etc?

Thanks for valued input to this thread BTW.

I was with them for about 6 months while we decide what to do with the house we own
It worked for what we needed at the time no contract and good price, billing was simple they give you a login into the website basic invoice paid via credit or debit card with a nice little daily usage meter as well. On average they took maybe 1 - 2 hrs to reply to emails which was a couple back and forward as I wanted it setup on port 2 on the ONT then swap over,
Other then that never contacted them until disconnect

@ageorge: have you taken a look at someone like Voyager then? I used them and found them pretty good.

@ageorge - see my comment above: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=226314&page_no=2#1955395

Don't go with a cheap ISP. Look into Voyager. Sure, they may be a few extra dollars per month but what is this really over the course of a month for an essential service? You then get a known good network, great support and you don't need to ask "is anyone with them" because the fact is people are, and love them. With joining such cheap providers you don't know about their network or support. There is seriously no point over a few dollars per month.

I'm speaking about this as I am a customer of Voyager and found their support great.

I don't think econofibre or hotshot will sit on the phone with somebody who doesn't know too much about technology for an hour walking them through working out a full network setup and rebooting an Edgerouter and a Draytek modem and having both patience and a lovely attitude the whole time (my fathers words) - I was away overseas, and seriously I've never experienced such great service from an ISP, they managed to get the internet back online for my parents without any complaints at all.

Big yikes! They just copied all of the sign-up, even the wording, form elements, ordering of lists, from Skinny Broadband. Go do a text comparison on their terms & conditions and you'll notice very quickly it's all copied from Skinny as well (find & replace job). I would be very concerned to give them my details, it makes me feel like it might be a scam. They even copied pretty much the same colour scheme as well and other visual design elements.
