Hi John, that sounds like method known as a shallow bury, using a ruggedized Fibre cable. 200mm is the correct depth for this and the cable will look like this (sorry old pic)

It's one of the standard install methods Chorus use to install Fibre.

I am really supprised that that is allowed so shallow when a spade could go through it with ease, also tacked along a retaining wall where a weed eater / wipper snipper could regularly come in contact with it.

At that depth I would have thought mechanical protection would have to be put on top of it, say 10mm H4 treated wood.

It's actually a lot tougher then most people would realizes. it's been rigorously tested. When buried, it'll withstand a spade dig which may scratch or dent the cable but not break it. same with wipper snipper. ^Mike

Chorus' lax approach on installing fibre these days is exactly what went on with copper installs for years and now those lead-ins are wrecked and the network is barely hanging on. Hence their current guidelines to install 450mm deep with conduit.

But I'm sure the microduct will be totally sweet no matter what. Definitely getting our $2-billion dollars worth og high quality network.

@chevrolux You mean the $2 billion investment Which is on budget and well ahead of schedule that's predicted to deliver $33 billion dollars in economic benefits. has the fastest growth in fibre penetration in the OECD at 272 per cent and will reach at least 80 per cent of New Zealanders by completion. I think its pretty good bang for buck. ^mike

In answer to hobdar's original question. Chorus branded green telecommunications conduit comes in four metre lengths. So you'd need eight to span 30 metres plus two sweep bends. As for your 45 degree bend, simply radius it around the bend at a gentle angle and you'll be fine.

At least fibre faults are easy to locate and fix. Unlike the copper fault I had in the BC era. (before chorus) It took at least 10 visits from telecom before it finally got permanently fixed. Fix was a new underground leadin.

Getting fibre installed from scratch was far easier. It took exactly 1 week between placing order with ISP and internet working on the new fibre.

Absolutely no issue with the project as a whole - it's freken awesome and directly benefits my livelihood.

But time will tell what all these cost savings measures will mean going forward.

@Hobdar , how did you get on with conduit, etc? FYI, I happened across three 45 degree sweep bends on Monday that would suit the green conduit that Chorus (sometimes) use for telecommunications installs. They were at a second hand dealer and $2.00 each.
