Im on Gigabit, mainly for the faster upload speed. Not much choice in available plans that have more than 20Mbit upload.

You have to let these people pay for the 1G service.  You have to encourage it. They hardly ever use the additional capacity it affords. But guys, guys, here's why you have to encourage it.

Yes! These beautiful people lovingly subsidize what you and I are paying!  They use pretty much the same amount of data, but they "need" 1G down, so they pay for it! 50% more usually than we do, for pretty much the same service except it goes a bit faster when they find a way to load it up for a minute or two!

 

 

 

Please, stop talking these people out of it and keep talking them into it!  It keeps the prices going lower for us!

In my opinion Yorkshirekid has an excellent and very appropriate use-case for gigabit.

@muppet Well said but there are people (like me) who would be on 100Mbit if it wasn't for the upload speed being so low. I am on Gigabit for the upload speed and whilst I use maybe 10% of this it is still better than having 20Mbit up.

Yea, I think the 200/100 plan makes a lot of sense, the standard 20M up is a limit, no doubt about it.

Gig seems overkill though.

I'd be pretty happy with a 100/100 (or 100/50).

Of course, MOAR is always better :)

We're on Unison Fibre though, it's not technically a "UFB" product.

Meh.  I'm paying the same right now for gig as I was paying for VDSL 3 years ago, and still less than I was paying for ADSL and Cable many years ago.  I usually have at least 10 separate upload sessions in use at any one time in the evenings, so having no bandwidth limitations (effectively) means I never have to think about it.  

On the downstream there's usually at least 5 devices doing something online at any one time, day or night..., with multiple things happening per device ranging from basic browsing to 4K streaming and anything in-between.  Could I do all that on 200/200 or similar?  Sure.  But since I'm still paying less than I was 3 years ago for a much better service, who cares?

Absolutely, we have a gigabit option now and people seem like they're upset about not having a need for the extra bandwidth! Can't make everyone happy even when it's awesome.

I already have Slingshot UFB at 100/20, which includes a phone line. I want to go to gigabyte speed with their $99 plan but they tag on another $5 for the homeline I already pay for. Just use a mobile phone? if you get power with Slingshot you can get a good mobile plan for free and get a further discount on the internet plan - I believe.

As for a gigabit plan, get it, it's not expensive and it's the best consumer internet product you can get.... just use some common sense - don't get a gig and connect a low spec'd machine on it and expect to speed test at a gig - invest in your home network & devices, use Ethernet only where possible and make it awesome.

If you're running a PLEX server then the extra upload is going to be a big help if external friends and family are going to stream off you while you too are using the net. 20Mbps UP isn't going to be good and 100Mbps UP only could still bottleneck things a bit especially if multiple people are streaming at once.

Fibre installers will cut the copper and good riddance, all sorts of issue happen with copper. You can get a naked plan without a home line.

i just switched to Stuff fibre because they offered me the Gigabit unlimited plan for $39.90 a month for 6 months. I think that is the cheapest i have paid for any internet, Adsl or fibre , in years . i don't need that speed but im not turning that price down , i guess i will have to put up with it
