well i wouldnt have said that if i hadnt have looked at all.

the majority are usb. i just dont see the point, unless they assume people just need some kind of connection.

re Id say its 5 years old like i said in another thread. as for pcie, im not sure but certainly no slot. mini pcie im not sure as I havnt had a close look inside. :-)

well you mustnt have there are heaps out there and a quick 5second search shows heaps.

given USB3 can handle 640MBps its already about 5x faster than a gigabit ethernet connection. if you dont have the option of a ethernet port its the next best thing.

even a USB2 802.11ac single chain wifi card will theoretically go full speed because usb2 is rated at 480mbps and .11ac is 433mbps.

you have options.

That could be just PBtechs focus I guess, perhaps a search on pricespy?

Yes the rated speed of USB 2.0 is plenty and even the practical speed most reviews say is about half of the rated speed, so about 240Mbps, which should be enough to test 100Mbps at the Router, so why is USB 2.0 to Ethernet adapter not an option for testing the UFB speed via ethernet?

And yes the usb 2.0 AC adapters should be plenty for what I need.....

Edit: Actually it looks like the 2 USB ports are 3.0.

doubt they would be USB 3 given the age, usb 3 ports are usually blue in the middle

well i checked as those specifications state they are usb 3.0, so went into device manager and its said intel usb 3.0 extensible host controller. then 2x usb root hub. 1x usb 3.0 root hub.

how do I check the manuacturing date, my eyes cant make out the micro writing on the back, designed for a an eye glass obviouslly, but should be in the bios info right?

soooooo many of these hg659s, clearly an asus or even the tp link archer models would be better, but for $10 the hauwei seems good value. How much range on 5Ghz should I expect from the hg659? If I can get 50Mbps on this older notebook with the AC USB adapter with the hg659, that will do me.

Im actually looking at selling this older XPS, its mint condition and the gt630 GPU does the job for older games and Civ etc, but Im thinking about getting the new iPad. I like the Mrs ative 2 she uses for her GIS Biology work, seems I have finally found a use for Tablets, just as they are a dying concept. the tab s3 is $200 more after you add the $150 pencil to the apple, and even though the ipad features the a10 processor, it doesnt seem to run any faster than the exynos based samsung tablets. perhaps thats OS optimisation? Im sure games would run faster, but not huge on games. So not sure if the AMOLED HDR Tab S3 is worth the extra $200......

is there anything wrong with the two antenna AC repeaters that plug directly into a power socket? they have an ethernet port but in reality, i just need an AC USB dongle for this older notebook and an AC 2 dual band router to start, every other device in the house will either be connected via ethernet or has AC protocol as they are all within 6 months of age.

like i was saying i might just try the change in router first and then start adding stuff if needed from there.

range reasonable performance through 2 walls.

do not use repeaters, if you cant explain why they are a good idea then you should use them.

Yep Jan 2013 build, yep 2 x USB 3.0 ports. Stoked. I thought they were USB 2.0 due to age. So would a USB 3.0 to AC adapter be faster than USB 2.0, or basically the same as both run fast enough to cover my  100Mbps? I think for testing my network a USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter is the way to go, I can use my near new Notebooks for that. Unfortunately the Mrs HP Elitebook for her work has ethernet but it runs through the works DMZ etc first.

Its hard to explain why in this isntance they arent a horrible idea. There are actually no walls directly in the way now Ive move the Modem. But it didnt improve anything so Im suspecting it could be the WIFI chip in the old notebook as the new tablets etc all hit the max Im getting right in front of the modem. So an AC USB adapter and an AC Modem/Router I think is the answer for the older notebook. Which might not be around much more than a couple months anyway.

main thing is to get this 100Mbps tested, then to get an AC router. I think I might just buy a budget HG659 for $10 and reflash the firmware with BP firmware. Id prefer physical aerials, but I could hack the HD659, Its hardly a costly risk as well.

Bahaha I just made a massive DURRRR, dont need to buy USB to ethernet device. Ive always wondered why this XPS has one of this flappy looking ports that looks like USB when closed. Its actually an ethernet port. Will runa  test now.

Just get a MiniPCI or Pcie card then no need to fiddle a great big thing sticking out the side of laptop
It should have come with one specs say it does, good for either 150 or 300Mbps can't tell from those specs

Problem solved.

Ping 1 ms Download 98.28 Mbps Upload 16.40 Mbps
My first test I got 19.5Mbps Upload so am ignoring that as I get 21Mbps sometimes on WIFI.   So its the router. Now, do I spend a bit more money or do I buy the HG659 and see how I go. Like I said 50Mbps will be plenty on Wifi for the older notebook.

Can I just plug the RT-AC66U directly into the ONT? I dont need a Modem and Router as such do I for UFB? A Router plugged directly in will work with Fibre? There isnt anything modem wise required is there?

I could plug the ac66u into the NF4v but is there anything modem related required for UFB?

@TeaLeaf PLEASE learn how to format your posts. I've had to edit 4 of your posts now since they break forum formatting.

I don't know where you're pasting from but paste into Notepad first before pasting on here going forward.
