You don't care if you use the supplied router.

You might care if you want to use your own router. Certain models don't support VLAN tagging (eg Apple Airport), but most do.

I rang Vodafone to ask them to move me to fibre and they said they'd send me a new Ultra Hub router. I told them that they sent me one at the end of last year but they insisted that they send me a new one. Maybe the new one will be pre-set for fibre rather than VDSL? I dunno...

We had the same, and yes it was all set up to just plug and play. Didn't see I needed it but it but they insisted, and I was all for getting a new one that just worked without any fiddling around.

On the OP's question I don't see this as so much as ISP's reliability (they are all much of a muchness IME) but more a network provider one. Reliability is surely subject to the infrastructure in place that services a particular area. For example I have had no reliability concerns with VF, but a couple of neighbourhoods over they are always complaining about disconnections and downed service with VF. Perhaps asking your neighbours could give an insight as to reliability in your area?

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Vodafone have their own flakey in places cable network that makes them get a lot more complatints that are not relevent when talking actual fiber connections.

It won't be 100% plug and play for me, I'll have to make a few changes to the set up (WiFi password and a few other small changes that I had made on the current router). But I guess a spare router might be handy for trouble-shooting any problems that might pop up.

So generally, all isps to the same address on UFB should be relatively stable? And only things like international connections/dns would be different between isps?

It's probably not really a factor then.

Should I be looking out for more free stuff (does that happen?). I did see some doing apple tvs etc for 2 year contracts (slingshot maybe?). As nice as that sounds, I'm not really keen on contracts. I see orcon have a GZ discount for 6 month (again on contract), spark with lightbox/netflix discounts

No, some seem to have had historic issues of lack of backhaul to certain areas causing peak time conjestion. I think they are all pretty much solved now but there have been problems in the past with my republic a couple of years back.
