RunningMan:

A relative of mine in a Chorus area had this done about six months ago. Cross lease property, neighbours ordered connection via ISP, Chorus contacted, scoped and installed up to the external FTP.

This happened to me with my Lower Hutt flat.  It is the middle one of three on cross lease.  My neighbour to the right wanted fibre, and as the copper is all overhead, it was a simple install to do the fibre the same way, so Chorus did all three flats at once.  I am living elsewhere to look after my mother, so I am not going to be connecting my flat to fibre any time soon, but the extra work for the installers to do the three flats instead of only one was likely just an extra hour's work so it made a lot of sense for Chorus to do it all at once.  They never asked me specifically where my ETP should go, but they actually put it in just about the ideal place - but in fact anywhere on the front of my flat would have worked.

Enable have been doing this in Christchurch, even install the ONT and leave it up to you to call your ISP in your own time.  In my case I only had to be home for a few hours and that happened to be a saturday morning !

Once I was ready to call an ISP, the switchover was simple....

Great service.

This is known as "Street in a week".

It's completely legit where after the Ready For Service (RFS) is given for the area by Chorus or another LFC they were trialing in conjunction with ISPs to get Chorus guys to door knock everyone in the street to get everyone connected at the same time.

Saves a LOT of time as they throw all the right techs to the street at the same time, and if consent is given by the owner (assuming it's not a rental) then there have been lots of success with this approach.

I think they also target areas with poor ADSL or have had many faults on ADSL and someone in the area requested UFB. Then they go around and door knock the whole street and do the install.

Personally I had UFB installed on Monday, my original scoping was for Tuesday AM. The Chorus/Downers guy called me at 11am Monday saying can we do it today? As I had already prepped my house with ducts and knew exactly where I wanted the ONT to go they were done with working broadband service by 2:30pm.

Hi there,

First off, we'd like to confirm this is not a scam, we have active Chorus reps who are visiting homes to bring Fibre to your premises as part of our infrastructure upgrade.

We'll bring the Fibre from the road all the way up to the installation of the ONT. During this process you'll go through a scope meeting to agree on where the build and connect will take place, as well as agreeing to end user terms before any work begins. This is where you'd agree to the placement of your ONT.

At that point you'd contact your broadband provider to request to connect to services when you're ready.

The fact that the installers just drove off and the install was cancelled is really concerning and we do apologise for the inconvenience caused. We'd like to take a look at your request in more detail to find out exactly why this has happened, provide feedback to the techs in question and make sure there are no more issues with this process moving forward. Are you able to send us a private message with your address?

Cheers,

Sara.

Is there any incentive for people who don't use the Internet to get an ONT installed?

For example, my neighbours have a landline, no cellphones and don't use the Internet at all.

Right now, there's a price cap on how much Chorus can charge for a copper line.

Starting 2020, this cap will be removed. This means Chorus can increase their prices whenever they like and the copper landline will get really expensive. Chorus can also decide to stop selling copper services.

So even if you only use a fixed line service for phone, it'll be in your best interest to upgrade to fibre. (Or swap to wireless.)

What about people who only have copper available, no wireless/mobile coverage, and fibre will never be available where they are?

They are only allowed to start decommissioning copper in areas where UFB has rolled, and for those outside the UFB areas, the price is capped to 2019 levels, without any allowance for inflation (which is apparently meant to encourage them slowly roll out more and more rural fibre over time)
