That seems a tad more fair, still doesnt match attenuation though!

Just wanted to give an update on this.
After consultation with coffeebaron, I decided it wouldn't be worth cleaning up our old lines while only getting +3-5 Mbit/s down, which isn't what I was looking for. I decided to go with Lightwire, as they had 4 towers in range and we already have lots of other nearby houses using it with good results. Although costly, with no hope of fibre it's as close as I will get to the 21st century.
Thanks for the help guys, especially coffee who was very understanding and helpful.
(Just to clarify, I wanted more upstream. 1 is just not good enough for my needs)

I'm on fibre now, so this is only of academic interest, but is the 1Mbps upstream limit

- a technical limitation inherent in the ADSL2 technology, or
- a configuration limitation of the way Telecom/Chorus chose to implement ADSL2, or
- a marketing limit in the package RSPs choose to present to retail clients, or
- a marketing limitation of the product Chorus choose to sell to RSPs?
Annex A supports a max of 1.3mbit in the configuration deployed in nz.
Realistically it's a small portion of spectrum allocated to Upstream as it's an Asymmetric product.
Changing to Annex M would allow for more upload, but at the cost of downstream and crosstalk if both products are running.
Chorus have opted to not face that hassle. Something i support..
It's simply down to the spec of ADSL2+.
cyril7: It's a limit of adsl2, there is a variant that allows around 3.5Mb/s download in exchange for some upload, however there are spectrum issues that chorus and most other telcos internationally prefer to sidestep, hence its not in common use, and not at all in NZ.

Annex M was popular on the UCCL ADSL products..
I dont miss them, more downsides than benefits, they still bane things like the vectoring rollouts.
