Started download at 6.57 of Enter the dragon
1.15gb
Could not choose download option of HD. When itunes said it was available on Apple TV.
Think HD is rental only.

Will confirm when download complete

Does any one know if they are on Akamai, or is it just going to be a movie by movie basis and really just luck of the draw?

Pity that the Apple TV price was not closer to that in the US not "From $498" as shown on the NZ Apple website..

Will give it a pass at that price..

surely the quality at 1GB is not that great for viewing on a large screen. At $20+ for a new realease why would you not just go and buy the DVD - comes with extras and wont be so compressed.

Also does anyone know the DRM rules for this - can I play it in another player i.e. mediaportal or burn it to disk?

It's a bit pricy but having used one a few times i have to say it is a very slick device and was only lacking this itunes video component up till now. as far as a featured set top box goes you can't get much better for the size/price/features.

Let's look at this question from some real life angle.

I can drive to the local VideoEzy store, pay $9 for a new release, and have to return it overnight. So I go back home, watch the movie and return it next day.

In realiity "$9 single day use" is DRM, isn't it? If I don't return the movie I will pay a fine and if I don't show up they most likely will hunt for me.

Renting a movie on-line is nodifference. Actually is better. On iTunes you have up to 30 days to start watching it and 48 hours to finish watching it once you start.

So, really, who cares about DRM on this level if you are just looking for something to watch on a cold night?

I think the HD version are downloadable (straight) to Apple TV instead of the iTunes? I'm not sure... I was looking for Apple TV details in terms of rental and purchases, as well as if the content can be moved back to iTunes instead of storing them just on Apple TV.

Internet is my backyard...

I think the DRM question is more about purchased product rather then rental. I agree with you re the rental side of things but what if I buy the movie ????

After reading all the info on this I'm still a little confused as to whether you actually need an Apple hardware device (ipod, Apple TV etc) to view these movies or whether I could download to iTunes on my windows PC?

Also interested in peoples opinions on quality of the SD & HD movies compared to DVD / BlueRay etc...

DRM Free as far as I can see - Burnt Enter the dragon to a disc this morning, Just under an hr to download 1.15gb

Having trouble playing it on my PCH but will try again tonight.
I agree with Chiefie - Seems only HD available with Apple TV - No option to choose between SD and HD when buying. \
Maybe more HD options to come.

The movies use the tried and test FairPlay DRM system, the same system they use for Music and Applications via iTunes. Theres no solid/current hacks for FairPlay so other than recording the analogue output out of a iPhone, AppleTV or what ever you want to use - its tied to 5 the 5 devices you sync to your iTunes account. Other than being tied to the iPod universe, its a pretty 'Fair' system of DRM. At least it could be worse.
Contrary to whats already been said - YOU CAN NOT BURN THESE MOVIES TO DVD IN ANY OFFICIAL WAY. In an unofficial sense, you can apparently use Tunebite on windows. I haven't used it so can't say much.

Oh and I finally spotted some mention of HD, Batman Begins, that if you access it via your AppleTV, its available in HD. It will be 720P as the AppleTV only does upto 720P. I'm not sure though if its in HD for rentals only or purchases too.

I'm surprised they managed to compress an HD movie into just 1GB. I would be interested to hear how the quality appears on a decent sized TV.
