Hi, so that cabling is 100Mb/s capable, its actually cat5e cable stock but only two pair in a white sheath, so this can be configured to support 100Mb/s ethernet to 100m, which is a good thing, I know you probably wanted full four pair cat5e that would support GigE but if it was my house I would rather have 100Mb/s cabled to support AV areas and feed wireless APs closer to where users are than just wireless that can range from 20Mb/s - 400-500Mb/s but shared with all other users.

Unfortunately there are no phone jacks close to the TV :(

I don't know much about data speed, we've always just survived on wireless so far. But that's with a single smart TV and laptops. I'm sure my son will want his own TV or gaming etc as he gets older so that could put a drain on things. Is wireless alone not a good idea going forward as things get bigger and better? If the answer is no then I guess I will have to do something.

I have another option, possibly. When the house was built 2x draw cords were left starting under the house and ending behind the TV. One was used a few years ago to install an aerial cable, but there's still one left. Perhaps the fibre installers could use that to pull through the cable to behind the TV, put the ONT there and then I can plug the router directly into the TV and use wireless for everything else, with an AP downstairs (or something else?). They were put there in case of catastrophic electric wiring failure as this part of the house has pitched ceilings with no crawl space above it so little chance of threading new wiring down, but I guess if we have to use it we have to use it. However I wonder if the installers will do it, and if they are not skilled I wonder if it is not worth the risk of them making a mistake and losing the draw cord.

Option 2 is to pull CAT6 cable via the same draw cord and get this through the external wall downstairs into the cupboard. This would leave CAT6 cable technically outside, but it's protected under the house and the external wall downstairs is fully covered by the 2nd story upstairs so gets zero rain or anything like that. This would give me a router downstairs to service guests etc (albeit in a cupboard) and a router upstairs servicing the TV (wired) and everything else (wireless). It would also mean I could use the existing phone jacks in the other upstairs rooms to connect APs to (or routers or whatever needs to be there, i know ZERO!) if someone can come out and crimp the plugs onto the ends for me.

As far as option (2) goes, does anyone know a good internet cable installer that covers North Shore Auckland? It's probably not a huge job for them so will need to be someone who tackles small jobs.

Hi, based on what you are saying, I would suggest you dont try getting the installers fit take the fibre to the top floor, they are pretty much not allowed to install anything blind in walls and will run a mile from it. That said they might.

I suggest you go wtih plan2, get a cat6 cable installed from behind the TV via the draw wire to under the house, and have this brought up in the closet with the rest of the current white cables. The ONT and router can be installed in the closet under and feed this cat6 and possibly the other existing 2pair cables as required. You will need to place either a switch and Wireless AP behind the TV or maybe a router repurposed as a switch/AP all in one.

Agreed. This will give you the most reliable solution with best available speed.

If you use the draw wire, tie a new one along with the new cat6 cable so you still have one to pull another cable later.

Slight threadjack. I had fibre installed and the ONT is in the garage. I had them put the ONT on the internal wall which is as far as the Chorus guys would put it. The WiFi signal is a bit weak, the house isn't large, but it has go to several walls and is poor upstairs.

I intend ultimately to have the router inside and have tested it's strength via a rather long ethernet cable. However I was poking around the lounge and found one Cat 5 cable. The house was built in 2002 and has phone jacks in most rooms. However I'm not sure where this one point actually goes, where am I likely to find the other end?

It would be nice to throw the router into it but I don't where the other end is to connect the ONT

Hi no idea where it goes but it's got a pe sheath so maybe to another building?, otherwise pull all the faceplate off to see if you can spot it, also if it goes to the ceiling pop up there and see if you can trace it, same goes for under the house if it goes down.

Also it's poorly terminated so when you do find where it goes have it redone properly.

I didn't get any replies, so re-asking. Can anyone recommend someone to pull some cat6 cable through in prep for Fibre, and also reterminate existing cate5 phone cables so we can plug ethernet (?) cable into them.

Or let me know the best forum to ask this service request.
