They tried to put it through the copper pipe, wanted to give up and do a fence job, I said no disconnected the copper and used it as a draw cable for the fibre, those contractors are paid a fixed rate per job so want to do it as quickly as possible!

And I blame visionstream for this

Why? The rates are set by Chorus / CFH. Visionstream are back to back with their subs.

Chorus tries to set the rates. If nobody accepts they're kinda stuck raising the rates.

Update: Chorus came back and installed the ONT on Friday afternoon. As I was going away for the weekend I didnt want the switch over to happen until monday so called Orcon to ask them to ensure I wasnt without internet over the weekend.

Sure enough on Sunday afternoon my VDSL stopped working. Fortunately i had got home by then so proceeded to try to switch over my router from VDSL to Fibre.

I am not that au fait with routers etc and was using my own rather than an Orcon router. I got all the settings for my ASUS DSL AC68U from the PBTECH website. 45 mins and lots of googling I still had no internet. In the end I went back to check the ONT and noticed the installer had plugged into LAN2 port. Changed it to LAN1 and voila instant connection but frustrating that the people paid to do the installs cant get it right. I wonder how many people this happens to resulting in hours of help desk calls and revisits etc. It can't be very effiicent.

Appreciate that would be pretty frustrating. Im inclined to think it was human error, we all have off days occasionally.

A call to your ISP probably could have solved the issue pretty quick. First thing they should be doing is using our tool to check that the ONT is up and part of that tool is a neat little graphic showing which LAN port is plugged in. Would have seen instantly that something was not plugged right.

Glad to hear you managed to get it up and running though 😊 Hope you are enjoying the Fibre.

After my gigabit Orcon connection went live on Sunday I went to watch a programme on Disney plus >Apple TV ( Gordon Ramsay ). The picture wasnt great at first and took a while to spool up (worse than previous week with VDSL) so I did a few speedtests.

Nokia ont> Asus DSL AC68U Router> TPLink SG105 Switch> Apple TV Speedtest app -190Mbps

Nokia ont> Asus DSL AC68U Router> WIFI 5Ghz > Iphone xr >134 Mbps ( Switched off QOS on router increased to 173Mbps)

Nokia ont> Asus DSL AC68U Router> WIFI 2.4Ghz > Iphone xr >74 Mbps

Note: I was in the same room within 4m of the router when checking wifi. I was still streaming TV at the same time.

Whilst these are much higher than Ive had before are they to be expected for Gigagantic Fibre?

Any suggestions for improving performance or am i just expecting too much?

You should be seeing your full rated speed for sure, maybe give Orcon a call might be something on there end they need to do.

OK several observations, don't rely on wireless tests, also the appletv app is not upto gig, please try a pc ideally running a Linux Live image but see how whatever you have goes but must be by ethernet not wireless.

Lastly those routers not sure of that particular model, but don't think they are up to GigE routing, others may ha e more specific model knowledge.

AppleTV4 only has fast Ethernet interface so doesn't go over 95 or so. I just tested using speedtest.net app on my TV4K and it tanked at 862.

Ive got it up to 600Mbps on the apple tv4k after reseting the ont and factory reset the router.
2.4 wifi is about 80.
5 wifi is about 190

Fast enough now. Will prob have another play over the holidays and check cabling etc
