for god sake... 3 YEARS?

Almost blows my mind thinking how much technology & I.T. will have advanced by then and to think that we'll still mostly be on ADSL1 is rediculous
and also, 3 years. what the hell. who's to say we won't have copper in the ground by then or at least a new means of or even.. breakthrough in internet delivery?

Not exactly blistering speeds:

May have to resign myself to setting expectations of NZ broadband a bit lower

@Bung, I can't remember Explorer being upgraded, but I don't doubt you. Go Express is also being grandfathered, meaning it will no long be available.
@mdf;
How far away are you from the exchange?
Also, check your modem is using G.992.5 Annex A as it's connection type.

All exchanges have been upgraded to ADSL2+......but a lot of roadside cabinets still have got ADSL1 gear inside them.....people who are directly connected to the exchange can get ADSL2+ speeds but people like me who are connected to a roadside cabinet with ADSL1 gear have to wait till April 2010 for Chorus to upgrade the cabinet to ADSL2+. My exchange already has ADSL2+ gear inside it. Exchange is more important than a cabinet. Chorus is mainly adding more cabinets so that majority of the broadband users fall within 2km from the cabinet to achieve ADSL2+ speeds....

Only if that was true i there are several exchanges still using Adsl 1 and won't be upgraded till 2009 or even 2011 as mine isn't on the list :( and some don't even have Broadband

Hopefully next year i get to test the Adsl2+ speeds with customers to see whats it's like

Your exchange will already have ADSL2 gear installed in it.

Cabinetisation (what the Telecom link is checking for you) brings that gear closer to you. Instead of connecting all the way to the exchange you can connect to a cabinet which is geographically closer to you. This has the advantage of boosting connect rates and lowering attenuation and SnR Margin.

Much less than 1km away from the exchange (about 600-700m I think).
Modem is definitely using G.992.5 Annex A.
Admittedly I ran the test under what is probably peak load, however doing the same test now (11.15 am) I'm getting even worse results:
Download Speed: 2824 kbps (353 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 752 kbps (94 KB/sec transfer rate)

I don't think the wiring in this house is the best (modem is currently plugged into a secondary jack about 5-10m away from the master), which may have something to do with it, but I still would have expected better results than this...

I got July 2011 as well (New Lynn, Waitakere City). Just across the road in Blockhouse bay they already have ADSL2+.

Im on the BHB exchange and connect using adsl2+ but as i am too far away i only connect at around 3.5mb
When my cabnet gets upgraded i will be 100mtrs from it however.

Mathew (mdf) what are you connection stats, if you are where you think you are (ie <1km) then something is definitely wrong, do you have filters attached in the correct places?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the filters are in the right place (between the modem and the jack, right... :)

Anarkist has spent a lot of the afternoon trying to get to the bottom of this, and I think I've managed to confuse the situation with him too.

One of the biggest problems I am having (and this is probably a topic for another forum) is that the different speedtests are producing wildly different results.

Speedtest.net --> Wellington will pretty much always give me at least 5mbps, and I can get over 7mbps (like now):

Speedtest.net --> Auckland is down around 4mbps, while Christchurch and Napier are around the 3.5mbps mark.

The Telecom speedtest has once given me 3, but is normally down around 1.5mbps (and over 100mbps once, since it does not seem to be possible to do a force refresh on Google Chrome... silly me).

And the Consumer speedtest (also provided by Ookla) gives the results as above in an earlier post, usually around 3.5mbps.

And before you ask (since Anarkist beat you to it), yes the test PC is the only one phyically connected to the router and I have turned all the wireless stuff off, so I'm pretty sure that's not using bandwidth.

So I'm not sure if there is a "definitive" way of doing a speed check?

I'm also planning on physically moving the router and test PC down to the master jack to see if that makes any difference (as I say, I'm not 100% convinced of the wiring quality in this house), but that will need to be a weekend project.

In terms of physical distance from the exchange, I am in Miramar in Wellington, and I can almost see the Miramar telephone exchange on the corner of Hobart St and Broadway (at least, that's where it always used to be - someone is probably going to tell me its moved though...). I guess it is about 0.5km away, and google maps seems to confirm this. So short of a wiring mystery, I'm fairly certain a distance of less than 1km is accurate, even allowing (quite) a bit of extra buffer.

It is reporting that I need to wait until Jul 2009 until I am connected to a cabinet. However, I'm pretty sure my exchange is already ADSL2+ (my speeds below seem to indicate this). I've no idea how far away I am from my exchange.

Can anybody tell me where I can look to find the location of exchanges?

That aside, I'm extremely happy with my ADSL speeds.

I'm on the Telecom Pro plan and my router/modem is a Linksys WAG325N.

My modem reports:
Downstream: 13972 Kbp/s
Upstream: 1045 Kbp/s

My last http://www.isposure.co.nz report:
Downstream: 12.07 Mb/s
Upstream: 0.86 Mb/s

https://www.speedtest.net/ reports:
Downstream: 11989 Kbp/s
Upstream: 891 Kbp/s

Seems to beat all my friends, so I'm happy!

Hi Mathew, whats important from a DSL connection point of view is the modems connection rate, attenuation and s/n, these are the details that relate to the modem and the line performance, speedtest to various servers indicate the total link and may have little or no bearing on the actual modems connection condition. If you can find the DSL status page with the above details it would be of more interest.

Chris based on a connection sync rate of 14Mb/s one could estimate you are around 2.2-2.5km from the exchange, so probably just on the edge of the home coverage of that exchange, so quite reasonable to assume that you will be eventually put on a cabinet which will presumably up your current connection rate.
