How does 2degrees compare now with CGNAT and prices still up there at $100 for 900/450

Would voyager be a better option now?

Also considering MyRepublic.

Just some background. I am with 2d and finding the pricing isn’t as sharp as they used to be. Now out of contract I am looking at other options.

People shouldn’t move over a few bucks per month, you should find a provider thats gives you good consistent service and with with them. 2degrees have really good reviews by the folk on here ao why go though hassle of changing for a few bucks.

Also bear in mind those of us on here who supply internet services will tell you its a very cut throat business.

Totally agree. I am not trying to save a few bucks. I have been with 2degrees for sometime. However the fact they changed me to CG NAT (hasn’t affected me) although I understand I can’t use a Remote Desktop connection back to home which I will be wanting soon and when I called them up about what deals they could offer for another term they basically said unless you are a new customer. There are no deals!

I just want a internet connection with good service. A public IP address with an ISP with good phone support if needed.

Every time I call 2degrees it’s taken over 30 mins for them to answer

If you used to RDP into your network and now can't because of CG-NAT then definitely that is grounds to look elsewhere especially if 2g doesn't come to the party, but I understand they did for people it affected at the time.

I just have friends who take the $200 credit, move to the new provider after their contact is up, swipe another $200 credit with the next provider then move again in another 12 months and repeat the process, its penny pinching with no loyalty, not to mention a hassle of changing each time.

@Delorean Somewhat off-topic but when I've phoned I've always gotten through in ~5mins. Not sure if I am lucky or not but I can't fault the service I have gotten from them.

Don't go to MyRepublic or Now. It isn't worth it. I am not sure what the appeal with Now is. By default, like 2degrees, Now do CG-NAT. This is the same with MyRepublic also (apart from on their "Gamer" plan).

MyRepublic require you to go onto their "Gamer" plan to get out of CG-NAT these days. All traffic is routed up to Auckland to their single point of presence and they are not the fastest - they simply gamed this by giving all their customers Gigabit for a short time until Speedtest "awarded" them. This sort of shady practice along with actual shoddy broadband is why you'll never see anyone who can see past their crap recommend them to anyone. They've always claimed to be the best, but with a small market share with people mostly on Gigabit plans (instead of mixed ADSL/VDSL/UFB plans like the other providers) means providers like MyRepublic and Stuff always "appear" to be the fastest.

Lastly, on this rant, given MyRepublic gave all their customers Gigabit and only achieved an average speed of 200Mbit really does seem rather rubbish doesn't it?

So, instead of changing based on price. Just go with the provider that works the best for you. I personally call up 2degrees yearly and ask what deals they can do for me if I stick around for another year (even though I actually have no intention to leave). As a whole, 2degrees has a great network and actually has very good support. There are always going to be the few who have a terrible experience with any ISP, but I mostly hear good things regarding 2degrees. At the same time; 2degrees are stating if you have any problems with being on CG-NAT to just call them and they'll sort it out. I've never heard of a customer who has legitimate problems not having a public IP getting things fixed up for them.

Edit: Instead of RDP, Install Anydesk (https://anydesk.com) on your PC and use that. It works through CG-NAT fine and is very quick. Also is far, far more secure than forwarding RDP to your PC.

That has been very informative. So I did the following today
Called 2degrees. Waited for a very long time to be told it would be $10 pm for a static and still no deals for existing customers.
Then I called voyager. Answered in 3 mins. Same price as 2degrees. They assign a public IP or static at no charge. They do support IPv6 and they will switch me on Friday AM

So. I did try to give 2degrees a chance.. shame as the days of snap have since gone. Voyager sort of reminds me of snap in 2011..

Really appreciate your comments and I did read your blog which recommends voyager!

Happy now.. hopefully the ipv6 is easy to configure as 2degrees was almost impossible to get working unless you had a fritzbox. Has anyone setup ipv6 on voyager with a TP Link Archer AX6000?

@Delorean Voyager and 2degrees have the same IPv6 configuration and I have got both working on Edgerouters (2degrees on my network, Voyager on the parents). It should be pretty straight-forward to get going but open another thread if you do happen to get stuck.

Voyager are incredibly good and I am sure you'll enjoy them!

Sort-of-related question - being based in Christchurch and considering a new ISP.

Do any providers, apart from Bigpipe (100/100) offer a plan with greater than 20 up without jumping to full gigabit? Residential / affordable plan, with static IP.

Bigpipe do 100/100 for $89/month which is $10 more than their standard 100/20. Jumping to Gigabit is $109/month with Bigpipe. I see Voyager is $99/month for Gigabit, which lowers the difference (and until reading this thread hadn't appreciated they offered static IP for free).

I guess the point is that I would prefer to pay $10/month more to 5x my upload rather than $20/month more to 25x my upload, because I don't need that much (and would rather not change my IP and "hassle" of changing ISP). But if the prices are similar to the ISP then it makes commercial sense and I can see why the market exists like it does (except why do Bigpipe offer 100/100!?).

@phrozenpenguin Even if you don't need it (to be perfectly honest, nobody really needs it) it still means you're less likely to run into any bandwidth problems. To be perfectly honest I'd rather pay $10 more per month for Gigabit. Voyager are a great ISP also.

shrub: That's a fairly large area for a single access point. I'd suggest a few access points around the house in mesh.

Orcon gig im payin 109 per month with static. Not overly impressed with the routing to aus. Bit higher ping. also access to things like nz steam cache is terrible. Get better speeds out of Aussie. I'm also interested who has the better network.

Would love some more details about your AUS issues. We are fairly well connected in AUS.

Also we have local steam caches in our network, and just about to add a lot more capacity.

Coming from MyRepublic I can definitely confirm: stay away from them. It's ridiculous that they route all the traffic through AKL.

I am actually in the same position as OP: (coming from MR and) looking for a proper ISP with decent peering.

It seems like 2degrees is the way to go according to this forum.
My question is: how does it stack up against Vocus Group's Slingshot? They have a really sweet promo at the moment: Unlimited Gigabit Fibre for 77.95/y for the first year.

I'd like to know whether to spend the extra 15$ per month (2degress has a 200$ credit for signing up rn) and going with 2degrees or take the deal with Slingshot.

Looking at PeeringDB it seems like:

2degrees has a sweet exchange point in California, to which a lot of major corps directly connect to - but overall not that much RS Speed inside the country https://www.peeringdb.com/net/2695
VocusGroup NZ has more RS capacity through the country but no exchange point in the us https://www.peeringdb.com/net/3798

To be honest, I just want a reliable ISP with the best possible international ping. Is 2degrees still the best way to go?
