Downstairs is not legally separated. As predicted this is getting more complicated. If I get one ONT for the entire house including downstairs won’t that mean that our internet would get worse spread over two families? Downstairs appear to be into gaming.

Can they do in-fill to downstairs if it’s not a legally separated flat with its own power meter? At present we have an arrangement where we share power proportionally. We left it this way in case the kids return from overseas and not in any hurry to change it. Thanks.

Since you own the property, just keep it simple. Get fibre for you upstairs, retain the cable for downstairs. Disconnecting your cable - the Vodafone tech's remove line splitters that were in place to serve upstairs and downstairs - will improve the signal strength. Removing the T-Boxes will improve the signal quality again. Basically every split 'removes' about 3.5db of signal quality, and the crappier the signal the poorer everything is. Removing 2 splits adds back 7db, which is a LOT and would improve downstairs.

Neither hfc or fibre will impact each others capacity. Chorus supplies the fibre to vodafone at the handoff point (wherever that is for your suburb), and it's vodafones problem to carry your traffic. They are one of the big two, so I doubt there will be a problem.

There's a conversation to be had here, if you choose to remain with Vodafone for both services.

So not a complication, more a function of market choice... which is why you're on this board, looking for help

To order fibre, speak to the provider. They send the order to Chorus, who do the install on behalf of them (ie, Vodafone).

Since the OP is in Wellington I would be happy to come look at what would be involved to Install a proper managed wifi solution with 2 VLANs so broadband could be included as part of rent

Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand why my internet got so bad and noticeably worse when downstairs got Vodafone. Their speeds were far higher than ours.

So I met with the OP tonight (lovely retired couple thanks for the shortbread) I first looked at the speed issues (40mbps) this was due to using an iPad web browser to perform the speediest (downloaded iPad app and connection was performing at the advertised 100/10)

The connection latency is sluggish (200ms even over ethernet) - I put this down to the HFC coax split 4 times (downstairs flat broadband, upstairs T-Box, upstairs cable modem for epg, upstairs broadband)

So OP has two options

1. Stay with Vodafone - HFC coax split will change from four to two and DOCSIS 4.0 - due to the TBOX and EPG modem disappearing with VFTV been installed

2. Move to Fibre with the RSP of her choosing + Sky - placement of the ONT in the Lounge would make an ethernet run to downstairs a breeze if the downstairs flat decides to move to fibre also. I explained secondary offer on port 2 is limited to 200/50 and not all RSPs support it. OP was not interested in sharing their broadband with downstairs, Sky cabling already present behind the TV where T-Box sits

Wifi only practically covers the lounge/kitchen due to the fact that the house is solid timber lockwood (including internal walls). Covering the whole house with Wifi would require at least four managed APs all cabled back to the router (don't believe mesh would work so this is cost prohibitive) - The only other place is broadband is used is the TV in the master bedroom - Again easy underfloor access between the lounge and master bedroom would make running an ethernet cable there easy.

Which ever option the OP chooses will see the loss of her copper-based voice so a small UPS to keep required equipment running for a short period of time wouldn't hurt either.

Really appreciated the visit @nztim. I didn’t know the ookla app measured so different to the browser, so voilà...my speed isn’t as rubbish as I thought, but still needs a boost. Thank you for your time and suggestions, you’re a fine trustworthy person. Cup of tea and goodies available any time you are passing by.

Speed is fine, its the 200ms latency which is the problem , you wont notice it after starting a netflix show but will when browsing especially things that auto update in real-time while scrolling for example Facebook & Instagram feeds as each request will take 1/5 of a second
