Just checked all the network coverage maps, only 2degrees (who seem to be quite fast updating theirs) are showing coverage, looks like the whole island will get a 4G signal 👍

@quickymart Watch out for the 2degrees 4G coverage map I know of a location that only has a 3G 900 site and I have drive tested the area and 0 4G and the 2d coverage map shows good 4G for the entire area

From memory there were two existing networks

1. Wireless nation built a small wisp network around the island with some government funding. It was backhauled via a satellite link.

2. Farmside also did a project backhauled by satellite where they installed some web caching equipment at the Waitangi telephone exchange to speed up well used websites etc and then sent it out via DSL around the town.

I am quite keen to see what this new installation would be using for backhaul.

I think you're talking about Vital who have been running the P2P and P2P2MP backhaul on the island for some time, but weren't part of the RCG deal and have aging equipment.

MBIM put out a good paper showing all the options, including some rational for running fibre over there at great expense. Well worth a read!

The schools I believe are dual connected by Farmside (via Vital backhaul via the old 50mbps all of island shared link) & individual Wireless nation satellite connectivity. The latency is huge over both, ~ 750ms or so. The traditional Satellites in the sky are too low on the horizon meaning it limites which satellites can be used. I.e no Kacific.

I *think* the new link is 250-300mbps? To start with it there about. I do wonder how the locals will feel about their paradise being a new destination for holiday makers who with cell coverage can now and only now go there :P

Hopefully the schools get a 4G connection in the mix soon, they have been doing it tough for a long long time!

Are these sites VOLTE only for voice or can you use a 3G handset for voice.

I was a part of the conversation about options - pre-starlink - and the current infra seemed to be pretty brittle.

We were pushing hard to get them fibre which was going to be astronomical but in our view the only option. Alas, maybe now for what is being spent we should be asking/paying SpaceX to launch some starlinks faster for us…

The issue with Starlink is there will have to be inter-satellite laser links to reach ground stations on the mainland.  This not coming till later in 2022 or 2023 and may be somewhat intermittent until all existing non-laser satellites are replaced with laser equipped ones.
