magu: Not really. Attainable Line Rate is only achievable under perfect planetary alignment, atmospheric conditions and hell-freezing-over scenarios.

It's the theoretical speed the modem WOULD get if there was no noise/interference/etc on the line.

I thought that the maximum attainable rate already took those things into account and that the only reason it would be less is if they are limiting the speed at the other end of the connection..

The other odd thing is that the upstream rate is actually more than the so called "maximum attainable rate"..

This modem has been fantastic so far.

My flatmate isn't so convinced yet - but we have a proxy server that has been playing up.

We recently switched over to using the PPPoA PPPoE bridge and have set it up using OpenBSD and a pf. It is great and works well. Exactly what we were after.

Reliable.

Thomson 536v6 all the way.

It looks cheap but its really well designed. I recently replaced my linksys with it, it does a far better job.

It obtains a higher sync speed, it hasnt disconnected since i started using it (im a heavy user) and it has a brilliant web ui.

All and all a really well designed product you can fetch for next to nothing. Id take it over any linksys router any day and im a networking guy.

Thanks for that advice.. I found quite a few on TradeMe for < $20.

One thing I found out is that the Telecom modems are "locked". Are you able to explain if this applies to the ones for sale from TradeMe (i.e. modems supplied for use with Xtra generally).

You can use a telecom modem with any isp in NZ, the "Locked" means that most of the settings are restricted and you can not change them. so unless you have a need to go fiddling with them then you have no need to worry about it being locked down

Exactly what boby said.

Just to add onto that, most the settings are still there (ie things like port forwarding, dynamic dns etc....) its just that the connection settings are automatically configured.

I use Dynaic DNS, and i port forward often. The UI is brilliantly built, far better than that of a linksys or dlink. Its like some one finally put some practical thought into it.

You wont regret it.
