I use 3 gig in a day often. eztv.it accounts for a lot of that, what.cd the rest...

NonprayingMantis:
TheBartender: Obviously each setup has advantages and disadvantages,...?

One point is that the fixed BB will generally give you much faster speeds*, and a more consistant service.

If you are cabinitised, actual speed of >8Mb/s is not uncommon, whereas you will be very lucky to get >1Mb/s on a mobile device right now.

Sure, that will improve when HSPA+ is run out, but then fixed speeds will also improve with technologies like VDSL.

Basically, for the foreseeable future, a fixed line connection will nearly always be cheaper per GB of usage, and considerably faster than the equivalent mobile connection.

*I am actually an exception to this rule insofar as I will get >1Mb/s speeds on my mobile at home, but often my speed on fixed is <1Mb/s.  No cabinitisation until 2012 either. Boo!

As I pointed out already, there is no arguement that each setup has its advantages and disadvantages...

ADSL is cheaper, faster, offers more quota and is more consistant...no arguement there...

But mobile is just that, mobile...you can do it anywhere, anytime...
Prices will fall, quotas will rise...they may never be as good as fixed line, but they will improve and be competitive...its just moving with the times

Ragnor: I'd use 3GB up in less than a week of just regular after work web usage

Slight exageration there son...

To use 3GB just viewing HTML in one week, let alone one month is no easy feat, unless your spending every waking hour online reading copious amounts of information.

And I am a heavy user, online 24/7 when not at work.

nakedmolerat: 1. if you have 'family', adsl/cable is a MUST. sharing the same internet with wife and 3 kids will make the speed crawl, it is virtually impossible to rely on the wcdma

2. not for gamers as latency is super duper high.

3. in the future, i would say there will be more wifi hotspots which will cost less. i came from a country that cellphone providers, if you are their customers, there are about 100+ wifi hotspots in each town for you to use for FREE. the same country that also offers unlimited 3G connection.

4. in the future, you will use more internet. not lesser. so the idea to restrict the use is not viable. in 1996, each page is about 400KB in size now more like 4MB with the flash and high res photo active x etc2 lol.

5. i use telstra cable for gaming + family usage, telecom evdo card whenever i travel and vodafone 3G on my phone for emails/occasional surfing. i need all of these to function normally :D

True.

In my instance, I have to share with no one, so no worrys there...
And I am not a gamer, so thats not an issue...

As for your arguement we will use more internet in the future, I do not dispute that, completely agree in fact, but when that time comes mobile prices and data quotas will have also progressed, as mobile data becomes more mainstream...in the mean time, I can manage with that quota based on my current usage habits.

I know the idea of cutting back may seem horrifying and impossible to some people but this is what I plan to do.

Thanks for the fedback so far guys

Your definition of general web use as just html is incredibly narrow

I think you will find a lot of people have more than one person at home using msn, skype, facebook, youtube, gaming, online backup (mozy, jungle disk) etc etc.

I would not define your usage as heavy at all if you're not using any of the above.

youtube is web, so is things like pandora - those will eat thru it like crazy.

Flash adverts - I often see the counter on my phone hit 4-500kB on a basic page load. No reason to think that a desktop machine would use any less.

Calm down young fulla, lets not be pedantic and start arguing the exact definition of 'general web use', I was being very simplistic...

And when I say 'heavy user', it does not have to mean a person who consumes large quantity's of data using various apps...that is just one definition of a heavy user...another would be a person who spends excessively long periods of time online...that would be me.

I certainly am not arguing that this solution is for everyone...
But for 1 person, who is not a gamer or any longer a prolific down-loader, this can not only work out actually cheaper, but far more flexible bing mobile.

Yes, it really takes the piss out of the old few 100 meg broadband plans that some people are still on - when you can prepay with vodafone at $10 for 100 or $40 for 512 and get something better for most people.

hairy1: No. It wasn't a sales pitch.... Most people stick to their landlines due to free local calling and we all know where that came from. I was just wondering whether you had a local number for those with local lines to call you with.
I'm 25 and have never got a landline in my life, and I'm willing to bet money I never will. So what about free local calling?! I could count the number of my friends who I know their landline on my fingers, everybody uses their mobiles all the time anyway

That is the generation changes for you... My generation (only mid 30's) still run for the landline to make calls (in this house anyway) Maybe it is time to get rid of free local calling.... i would think it would be politically unacceptable still. The Aussies don't have it and they seem to survive! We don't have a landline either but have free local calling via our 2talk connection....

My wife probably spends half an hour on the phone each day to her sister...

You probably just make some magic happen to have any calls on your moble become zero so that doesnt suprise me ;)

I have naked dsl and use 2talk/italk for all my calling because it means I can put the asterisk machine between callers and me which I never got working right on an analog line. Most of the time I foward it to my mobile since the inbound QOS doenst work well when there is 2-300 open tcp connections torrenting.

I could easily go fully mobile now as a single user under 3GB, I buy music on cd/downloads instead of illegally downloading it (quality/control over volume/loudness compression levels), I purchase DVD's to rip into the Popcorn hour (quality control/consistent format)and use the internet for just research and very "thin" things. I'm on Big Time unlimited data plan and I hardly hit 2GB last month

I do download a few youtube clips of the weird, wacky and wonderful but little else due to other things in life taking far too much time!
