I was wondering what the heck was going on, I saw the title (Telecom) so had a look. I thought I was going crazy, nothing in the OP and people were replying as if there was something there!

It would be silly to assume we don't know this kind of thing goes on, in fact the team that manage the shaping equipment usually notify me before threads like this go up. The usual chain is vendor - telecom - you.

Surely the issue is the number of people though. If say 10 were doing it before it may be ok to ignore it. If that swells up to 1000 then that may cause issues. I can see the headline on Stuff: "Telecom's Bigtime foiled by geek". Then I bet there is more incentive to fix it

very true. which leads me to beleive its an expensive problem to fix...

Off topic, but I hate the fact that you are able to edit your posts on forums. I think it should be limited to the first half an hour after you post something so that you can fix typos and that's it. Otherwise it just gets abused time and again ruining threads for people who don't read them at the right time.

Arent telecom using shaping on bigtime?
Slingshot has a torrent multicasting system that inserts itself as a peer and if a number of users are downloading the same torrent, it will download a piece for one user, and force feed it to the others. Results in popular torrents downloading at 500kb/sec at almost any time of the day without too much cost. Doesnt 'store' it so its not being held anywhere.

I am assuming Telecom will be putting something similar in place if they havent already.
