I'm going to have to check out the options in the market aswell. Was on the 256kb/unlimited with Orcon at home aswell.

Their new plans aren't 'that' bad, but I was on the 256/unlimited for $49.95/month (earlybird special. Now on the new plans it's $59.95 and only 40gb.. will have to email them and see if i might be able to keep the lower price or not..

Otherwise I have to pay $109.95 for exactly the same plan I 'was on'... : (

Slingshot 256k unlimited plan here. Costs just on $50 a month.
Speed is... acceptable. (barely)

Seems the only way to get a truely nice broadband connection is to go and work for an ISP and do everything "at the office" :/

Would love a 512/256/unlimited option since in gaming it'd mean teamspeak isn't effected quite so much, and wouldn't have to worry too much about a cap. Not that you can really blow a cap on a smaller connection with the speed they get.

IIRC doesn't netguide have a chart up comparing plans on dial up and DSL for various providers? Not sure if its up to date though.

The bad thing is, and wether I can believe them or not, all the routers i've had show the line is max 320 (down) 160 (up) so even if I could jump on a bigger plan, it probably wouldn't help at all. Telecom aren't interested in seeing if they can improve the QOS though.

Qos and telecom. Why should telecom apply qos to allow us to make free voice calls over the internet see earlier cartoon. They do apply qos and they also use interleave which causes latency. When I went onto my 2mb downstream plan the latency improved dramatically. still no where near what I would like to play games though. Laaagg!
I would quite gladly set my ftp web news traffic down to DSCP priority 0 if I could have no data cap.

There is a difference between not supporting it and trying to add latency/QoS to make it not work/work-as-well.

I'm on Orcon 256 unlimited, but i am shifting to ihug very soon as i don't like the new Orcon plans.
Does anyone here know if ihug will be good for Xbox live? i play it often using Orcon and i can say that it is very average.

The plan i want is ihug 2mb/128 40gig (20+20) for $69.95

I'm not really happy with NZ internet at all - i guess i would have to thank Telecom for that.

You know, I really like Ihug plans as well, quite a fair quota for usage, and also acceptable speeds of 2Mbps (unless you upload quite a lot and then you'll be quite disaapointed).

BUT...... I have 2 problems with it....

#1: The long 18mth contract they bind you to. If only they can just offer free connections (or transfers from ISPs), and bind you with a 6mth contract, rather than throw in a free modem as well and restrict you for 18months. One and a half years is quite a long time, you never know what new plans might be coming out...

#2: The offpeak and peak data usage. Can anyone confirm, whether they restrict your peak time speeds, if you bust your off peak usage? And vice versa? Cause they claim not to on their website, but that's not some other users say... Very mixed signals coming in.....

But I must say I've always wondered what they'd do if you got tolls with them aswell, and then put a toll bar on the line. ie: I live in a flat. There's a toll bar so noone can argue over who's calls were who's, and everyone has a cellphone anyway.

This is outrageous, how can telecom be saying "Cheaper Faster....." when my plan is near doubling.

I got an email form orcon and at the foot it outlays the new pricing and plans structure. There is still a 256/128 (currently 49.95) unlimited but at $109.00 yes ONE HUNDRED AND NINE DOLLARS after mid April it makes a complete mockery of our broadband in New Zealand.

Also thier "Autosense" 10Gb data usage add on is now 5Gb for the same $10 fee.

NOTHING HAS CHANGED....

The cheapest plan is still $39.95 and is 256k 2g cap. Everything else is more $$$. wheres the cheaper faster in that?

ALL CURRENT ORCON USERS WILL BE MIGRATED TO NEW PLANS - no choice in the matter regardless of what plan you were on before mid April.

Also orcon has removed its forums, nice way to deal with the forthcoming torrent of unhappy customers. As for myself im looking to jump ship to another ISP as are many other Orcon customers I'm sure

Is there any way to get out of the modem/free connection deal without incurring the $150 disconnection fee?

Ihug does have a conversion offer but I'll have a hard time selling the disconnect fee to the flatmates even if we get a $100 tolls credit.

Well.. the GP forums thread certainly goes on for a bit. Quite a few valid points, but like a few I'm still a bit peeved about being charged extra when I was on the earlybird plan.

Although I did have one idea. I wonder if any of them have considered a slightly odder incentive. Pay for 1yr upfront, for xyz plan. You're locked in for one year, and they agree not to change any of the conditions on your plan for a year. Could make an interesting deal. Especially if they discount it for bulk payment. One year in one hit wouldn't be cheap, but if you were guaranteed they wouldn't up and change your service and were prepared to give you some kind of discount given you're 'very' locked in for the 12 months.. . . Would be interesting. Doubt any of them would take the initiative though. It would also have to be a pretty damn good plan to warrant locking yourself in for that long.

All good: TelstraClear change its plans. Iam already on the 20GB plan, which means soon it will be automatically changed to the 80GB/month plan.

I can't complain about that...

I thought orcon was a good ISP? are they migrating all old plans? I loved leeching off them (on the 256k/ early-cheep)
