I'm interested though I don't think my 256kbps connection will be able to stand up to the punishment of streaming video.

Bittorrent is just the protocol. The tracker sites are where you get the torrents from.

Yes, it was designed as a distributed download system where the downloaders contributed back (your download speed is roughly based on the amount you contribute back).

The guy who made it did not intend it to be used for piracy and there are plenty of uses for it. Unlike other peer to peer programs like Kazaa, Former-Napster, Limewire etc it was not marketed as a means to get 'free' songs, movies etc, however it was still used for that purpose due to the protocols ability to lessen the bandwidth demand places on a server (the peers contribute towards the torrent as they download).

Other clients who have adapted the bittorrent protocol have been quite to fill that void and some newer features are used less for legal torrents than for pirated downloads.

Bittorrent is now the most used P2P protocol in the world and any sites that host the .torrent files cant get shut down because they dont actually hold any copyrighted files. I've found i usually get downloads around 150-200KB, uploading about 4

Old school myself. Usenet and NZB-O-Matic. I hate that sharing stuff. You can end up uploading 3 to 4 times the file you are downloading. Usenet has everything and I can download at max bandwidth. Favourite groups are:
alt.binaries.tv
alt.binariies.multimedia

I don't really care about the speed. I always go over my 1GB plan. All I do is queue up my NZB's and let it go for it 24 hours a day.

Dont' know if it's still the case, but the paradise.net news servers (now redirected to the clear news server) used to be in the free servers IP range. Full speed, no charges.

Our flat managed to clock up 9 gig in the past month, we are on Ihug's Light Broadband plan 2mb / 10 gig peak + off peak.
Pretty happy with the connect, we use the Dslams off the Wainuiomata Exchange, due to distance (and a bit of crappy wireing in our flat) the nokia router only connects at 1400k tops but speed wise we can max it out 24/7 from everywhere, thats like..140k a sec in the middle of peak time downloading from overseas.

any uses filelist.org or torrentleech.org as their bittorrent site? they are private trackers and registrations are currently closed but certainly fast speeds especially when you connect to american seeds who give you upload speeds up to 50kbps/peer.....

Yes, I use filelist/filemp3, you go for the vip? Money well spent, no wait times, no kicking for bad ratio.

very very fast at getting releases up, the best trackers IMO. I max out my 2mb on every torrent. Oh, yeah!

As for data, usually pull about 40GB a month now, used to up arround 80-90 but got sick of buying 200gb HD's got 2 Pc's full of them now.

kindaa annoyed cause i paid filelist.org for vip a week ago and got 3 months membership and just yesterday signed up with ihug for 512k upload...so i can have a ratio of over 1 on unlimited up speed @ 64kbps....U.S $20 waisted but then i can now build up my ratio with the new upload speed while im a vip member....

ps - filelist has been a bit slow from the past moth releasing stuff...have you tried torrentleech.org....i have some invites if you want 1?

Well over the last 8 months on "Orcons 256/128 earlybird unlimited plan" (now discontinued) I averaged around 20GB a month.. - Moving to "Quicksilvers Orbit 30, 3.5 Mb/128Kb, 30 GB international data, FREE national data" in around 10 days, so will be interesting to see what I do then :)
