one of my customers works for TRANSFIELD....he does all the broadband installation...he told me that the exchange being too far from my house and thus not gettng full speed is all BS....he said telecoms equipement is TOO old and crappy to give full speeds to the houses the exchange is connected to and said it will take atleast 3months to get fulls speeds when telecom will start installing ADSL+2 equipment...

ps - he told me never to trust the person on the phone of xtra's call centre....they just bs stuff....only engineers themselves know what the real deal is....

Interesting, when my plan got upgraded I was getting around 3Mb out of 3.5 but a couple of days ago this went down to 1.7Mb however since the next day I'm now getting between 3.2 and 3.4Mb...

Re: lurking

They dont just lurk here, they post here :-) (in an unofficial capacity). We have Vodafone staff and dealers, Telecom staff and dealers. I dont think we have Woosh or TUANZ or Telstra here though. Unless they are lurking - but really - who would lurk here - its such a great community that even a hardcore lurker couldnt lurk for more than about a week before ditching the lurking way and joining in.

(I like the word 'lurk' it sounds cool)

lurk lurk lurk

Some VFNZ and TNZ people, and active posters by the way. There are a couple of Woosh people around, but I don't see them posting much.

TUANZ? The people there don't even reply to e-mails, let alone participate in anything. Do they do anything, really?

There's one person from TelstraClear, he posts, but most in the mobile devices area. He is not related to the broadband area, so don't worry about him replying to TCL questions, unless they are related to mobile, he might jump in (but not all the time).

We have more than 20,000 registered users, and yes, a lot of lurkers.

Back to the topic now.

I'm getting nowhere with regard to speed performance, my average is still around 2.2Mbps on a 3.5Mbps plan.  My ISP has exhausted their options with Telecom, and have suggested that maybe I go onto a 2Mb plan.  The only trouble with that is, a 10GB data cap on 2Mb plan costs roughly same as the 3.5Mb plan I signed up for?!? So it really is a no win situation, unless I change ISP, but in doing so I have to pay a churn fee.  ARGHHH!!!

It would seem my speed has dropped form my normal 2 - 2.1 to a nice 1.6 since I "upgraded" to 3.5.
Just got off the phone with my ISP, they say they have reset the connection, we shall see how that goes when I get home.

On my 2Mbps plan i would consistently get 1.8 - 1.9 Mbps

Now I have been switched over to 3.5Mbps (no plan change - they must be changing everyone over now).......

Gives me an average of around 2.9Mbps (being generous).

Disgusting... proprtionately slower (promised vs acheived) than my old plan.
Why didnt they commit to 3Mbps??

Ugh.

Tony - did you get 56kbps when ISP's went V90?

Hitting refresh continually for a 1 minute period on a speed test is not a very scientific way to find an average. You got 2.9Mbps over 7 tests in a 1 minute period. You also achieved 3.36Mbps for one of the tests which is very close the stated maximum of 3.5Mbps.

As I have mentioned previously, I got 1.9MBit on a 2Meg plan, which was acceptable.
I was getting 51kbps on V90. (Once I got the modem, stupid bundled Flex compaq...)

I never purported that test to be a definitive scientific one, which is why it ended up on the forum and my blog, rather than submitted as an actual news article.

Are you saying that a scientific test would reveal average speeds off my exchange or even in my region to be more than 3Mbit?

Nearly getting to the stated speed once doesnt count for much, especially if the test is unscientific...

Since about 10 this morning, I have run around a dozen tests on Telecoms own speed test at www.jetstreamgames.co.nz/speed and the fastest i managed was 3085kbps... no unscientific averages there..

You know im a Telecom advocate. I dont bash Telecom for the hell of it. The simple fact is though, they advertise 3.5Mbit, and I dont get anywhere near it, with modern Telecom approved equipment very close to the exchange in an area with relatively new lines.

If I went on full rate jetstream (JS600 etc), I would happily bet $100 that I would recieve over 5Mbit. That means there is some other problem - not the exchange, not my lines, not my gear.
