Is Orcon a carrier neutral datacentre? I didn't it would be... If it is then fine, otherwise, how do you think Orcon would feel about "Hosting Direct and Orcon figure out routing of that subnet between them so Orcon route our national and Hosting Direct route international."

No idea if they are. But they're more likely to be friendly to such than a company like Telecom.

They wouldn't do it for free, surely? And lose revenue in the process?

If you want a carrier neutral datacentre then perhaps should look at Data Centre.

They're lose more if someone shifted to data centre.

Orcon have lots of space in their data centre don't they? So in a similar situation to hosting direct... want to full up space.

Dunno why they want to charge so much for bandwidth. Maybe because they can?

mercutio: I'd say just get all your bandwidth through hosting direct for your servers if you want to save money and risk your connectivity on them.

It simplifys things. If you're sharing the same bandwidth segment for office, then you could run a proxy at data centre for web and cut your usage a bit down.

Another option would be to go assymetric and only send outgoing via hosting direct. If doing this I'd suggest doing BGP on a private AS number sending a full route table, in case they go down. That way you can just keep your default route at orcon and not accept default route from hosting direct.

That said, you have got another option too. Try talking to your Orcon account manager and see if you can get some sharper pricing.

You could also consider carrier-neutral datacentre. But I'd imagine you'd only do that if Orcon dropped the ball considering you just moved into orcon dc...

Yea I'm gonna leave it for now and just talk to our account manager about sharpening the prices. Based on a few other people I have heard from on here they are massively out of touch on their pricing. Yea in the future I definitely will be going to a carrier neutral DC and will get my own AS and subnet. I can then probably even directly peer at the peering exchanges, get 1/2mbps from someone like FX (or even get it bundled with international proivder) for Telecom/Telstra and get international from one or more providers.

Will be a future thing though, will just negotiate with Orcon for now.

Don't do this. OSPF is an interior routing protocol and should never be used between autonomous networks.

Using BGP it's actually a relatively simple configuration, if HD is an Orcon customer.

Your BGP speaking router (which could use a private ASN if mutually agreed by HD, Orcon, and yourselves) will announce your existing e.g. /26 to Orcon and HD. On the Orcon BGP session you should tag announcements with their communities saying "only announce to domestic peers and customers; do not announce internationally". On your HD session, announce the prefix and ensure they announce it to Orcon for international services only.

Since Orcon is an upstream to both, the international path will follow the HD announcement. You could also possibly kludge this by announcing two /27s to HD and a single /26 to Orcon, with appropriate community tagging to ensure domestic and international separation.

This assumes that Orcon have their network configured to support this topology and are interested in supporting this approach for their customers. From a technical perspective it's actually not particularly tricky and used to be very common-place 5-10 years ago, but whether operators are interested in doing it now I could not say.

Orcon is Hosting Direct's upstream. HD is even using Orcon IP addresses. So in both instances their used IP address space will be a part of an aggregated advertisement.

That said Orcon might not want to play ball. And I don't even know why Hosting Direct is banned from this forum. But it makes me a little suspicious.

Mercutio has it correct: if Orcon is the mutual upstream, prefix length is pretty much irrelevant as it will/should be matching an aggregate.

The /24 length limit is somewhat of a myth anyway, it has been well proven that /25s and longer will propogate pretty far and wide.
