Yes Don I think you are a little bit confused.....
You seem to be forgetting that not only does Telecom upgrade/maintain the LLU, but they also have this thing called the CDMA mobile network which they will be upgrading to EVDO RelA, not only that they also are building the NGN, they will also be upgrading the current DSLAMs to ADSL2 this is just a few things they use it for, now don't you think this is where the $750,000,000 is being spent it's not all about broadband..

It's not all about "broadband" but it is all about moving to a complete IP based network, whether it be delivered over cable or wireless.

Oh granted I haven't seen a proper costing of what it would cost. I'd like to.

Yes, $5 per person is a little light I'm sure for tripple play, but the point is that $5 per person and a pen swip could launch us forward today rather than some promise of something better in the future.

Let's not forget that there's a fleet of dslams in exchanges today that are delivering ATM speeds of up to 7mbits while we're only being given access to half that speed. Personally I never cared about the data caps but it really annoyed me that the service was so slow. For my part, if I have to put up with the slow speed then I'll sooner give my money to the competion to push things along.

I am not confused at all.

I asked a question and it has taken 19 posts before I've seen an answer that even addresses my question - your post being said post.

Ok let's break this down...

ADSL1 --> ADSL2

I don't know what that will cost but I do have some questions. What's the point?!? ADSL1 can deliver speeds of up to 8 mbits yet Telecom have kept us locked into speeds of less than 1mbit for most of the time it's been in operation and only just allowed us to have half the potential speed in the past 2 months.

Why not just give customers the speed that the technology can deliver right now?

CN --> NGN

If you want to deliver usable speeds on DSL2+ then yes, you have to do this. However I've yet to see it proven that there is going to the demand in NZ to justify the building of this new NGN. Thou I also confess that I know so little about it that it's not really worth comment.

I would like to know what it's costing thou and what the Telecom share holder is getting for their investment.

CDMA --> EVDO ReIA

Telecom have already installed a mobile data network and then never priced the data at an attractive price. I question the value in this upgrade.

However this network has nothing to do with ULL.

In which case why was TG toughting this figure about at all? Why doesn't she simply stick to talking about figures that relate to the issue?

$1,800,000,000.00 dollars was wiped off the value of her company in the past two days. That value didn't need to be wiped off at all had she given the right figures as a comparrison and given the market some assurance of the true impact of this UBL.

You have a few good points but this is just yet another.. another. .like all been before it another "I hate Telecom" post. ZZZzZZZzzzZZZzzz. I could sit here typing all night like some or I could go off and make some money...

If you hate them so much, beat them to their own game! build a network and sell it to consumers.

Don - just had a look at your web site. Are you an Indranet investor by chance? Nice idea but ULL makes no difference to what you are trying to achieve. Sharing bandwidth with your neighbours is not a new idea.

If you happened to read the latest Telecom result you would have seen that revenue for mobile data for the last 9 months was $126M. This is one of the fastest growing areas of the business and there is a business case for Rev A just as Vodafone have one for HSDPA.

The market made up its own mind. Theresa could have pleaded that everything will be ok (which it will) but there is little point when institutional investors would have already decided to move money elsewhere. Shares go up and down. For every share sold in the last few days (millions of them) there is a buyer.

By the way are you a Telecom share holder? If you are, then you are more than welcome to attend the AGM and ask Theresa all your burning questions directly.

I think Theresa's performance over the past few days has been shocking for the CEO of the biggest company in NZ. I used to believe she was a very intelligent person but her actions are that of somebody who is so angry she's throwing her toys out of the sandpit and then moaning that she has no toys left. The future is very very bright for Telecom and you yourself as an employee realise that (along with probably most others) yet your CEO and Board are going around telling everybody it's the end of the world. Competition brings innovation to the marketplace, just look at what happened when Clear first arrived and Vodafone took over BellSouth. Telecom having to lease a bit of copper to a competitor should be the least of their worries, they should be focussing on how they can roll out a NGN that will be superior to anything that a competitor can offer. If that NGN can deliver to it's full potential then Telecom won't have a worry in the world because consumers will be staying with them. Having both a mobile and PSTN network puts them in a very powerful position.

Yes. It's why I'm now proposing using cheep wifi cards to build a network. Sadly it's all I can afford now. ;)

Actuall a bunch of you on here set me thinking about that exact issue. The guy who posted that question about VDSL got my mind working over time for half an hour. It occures tome that I could look at setting up localised pops with naked DSL.

No it's not and I feel very stuipd in some ways... I was involved with an ISP 12 years here in Riccarton... I should have looked at running blue cables up and down the whole street then... It's embarrising to think that 12 years later there are still finance houses using dial up modems on telephone lines.

You are right on... the idea is not new and it's still be thrown about because it's a good one. The purpose of my web site is inspiration and educate. It's working as well.

Mobile data accounts for 2.6% of total revenue... hummm there's that percentage again. I can see the point. No wonder the market is taking fright.

Yes I really don't see why TG didn't say exactly that... shares go up, shares go down... Helen Clark summed it up very well. If you're going to spend so long yapping about how bad it is then the market is going to react when it happens. I also agree with you completely... it wil bounce back next week - history in other markets in our region shows this trend. Wish I had the money for a bit of profit taking.

No I'm not a share holder. Personally I prefer to pose my questions in public forums like this one. I find that I normally get better answers. Healthy discussion also empowers others to ask questions of their own at such events as well.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I think you missed my point completely.

I can see exactly where Telecom is spending it's $750m.

I was making a point in a back handed way - I think you might have missed this?

1. TG tells us that her competitors are proposing spending $20m and as a result will deliver a better bb experience to Kiwi's. This experience would under mine her company.

2. TG tells us she's spending $750m a year yet we still have a crap internet experience.

3. Direct question (perhaps easier to understand), If TG's competitors can spend 2.6% of her spend to deliver us a better bb experience that won't embarrise our government in international circles then why doesn't she ask them for the $20 million and deliver us a better experience?

I think you also missed another point I was making... I don't wonder how Telecom can spend $750m at all. I do wonder how they can spend it annually and still end up in the position they're in.

Are you having trouble seeing which ones of my questions are retorical?

That;'s whay I used wired country, DSL is terrible here, had to resort to it after I moved from Nth shore.

Sadly, like everything in NZ, open anything value-wise and it gets abused heavily and leeched by illegal media pirates downloading heavy usage of stuff the'll never watch...

OK I abused the original $10TXT somewhat, Oh those poor 2280's! it's really sad when you wear the keypads down to clear rubber till the membrane wears out.
