Zeon: I lol every time I see threads like this. Due to the current state of wholesale access costs, national/international transit and low buying power of NZ ISPs they cannot offer plans anywhere like this. Maybe with the UFB and Pacific Fibre it will be easier.

1080p: Those who can't imagine the uses for larger data caps on ISP plans simply show their ignorance and lack of imagination.

I understand that 500GB and 1TB plans are not going to be the most common plans but for those that want them then _they should be there_ at a reasonable price. At the moment they aren't.

Also, just as the road speed limit isn't a target; neither are the ISP data caps. Some people would love to be able to purchase a 500GB plan and know they would use a maximum of, say, 300GB per month but have the peace of mind knowing that they won't ever receive a huge bill at the end of the month after chewing through data charged per GB. They wouldn't want to buy a 300GB plan as it cuts it too close to their perceived monthly usage.

I am tired of the people ranting on about large data users as only being copyright infringing p2p users, the fact of the matter is that is no longer the truth. Anyone with a large tech-savvy family or group of flatmates can chew through several hundred GB per month in completely normal and legitimate usage. In fact I have to carefully monitor my flat of four's 200GB cap usage because we come very close every single month.

+1 here

You really have to have a  lack of online knowledge if you cannot think of uses for a large data cap.
I have a family of 5 all use the internet a lot, Gaming, youtube, VOIP, Video etc.
Youtube alone is a huge data hog not to mention TV on demand and Isky, the list goes on.
Windows updates come thick and fast these days, Google's new OS for tablets and notebooks runs online.......the possibilities are endless...... no Illegal P2P downloads needed.

I can assure you that every ISP out there wants you to download as much as you possibly can as they make semi decent profit from bandwidth.

However as Ragnor and Zeon have pointed out, until very recently the wholesale environment has not allowed for large data caps. With EUBA becoming more common place, you'll start to see larger plans offered, so long as telecom wholesale or chorus / whatever they are called these days don't cripple EUBA as they did to UBS/UBA

Soon you'll be able to download as much as you damn well please and no one will point the finger at your anti-social habits.

b0untypure1:

you downloaded 170Gb on a 10GB plan?

Impressive, (and I would love to know how it is done!) but not sure what the relevance to this thread is.

ETA: or are you on the 'additional data' plan, and so will receive a bill for 160GB @ $2 = $320  next month?  :o

I should add "lazy to resize pictures = ban" to our FUG.

Congrats you're the perfect example of users who dont wanna pay for things.

You know that 170gb you did betwen the 18th and 27th of June? That's an average speed of 1.7mbit/sec going 24 hours a day during that period

Even buying in bulk that 1.7mbit cost the ISP $70/mbit which means it cost the ISP AT MINIMUM $119 to give you that (Add in support/server/staff costs and the DSL circuit cost)

Don't get too excited.

The good news is bragging about it will mean any exploits Telecom's system may have are guaranteed to be closed. Don't believe me? Just look at all the other people who have decided to post on here in the past bragging about bypasing throttling and metering systems!

I think my connection is a bit lucky, it usually takes a couple days to be slowed down after my cap, been the same on Telecom & Vodafone NZ.  Last month I reached my 30GB cap, sure enough it didn't slow down, when I was on the phone to VF about something else I asked if their data system was okay, then I told them that I haven't been slowed down at all and I'm getting all this free data, even after hearing that they said that it is most defiantly working fine.
