i think most people dont really mind paying for movies/tv shows, its more of the wait. i love torchwood, torchwood doesnt play in NZ as far as im aware. dvds/blurays take a while to come out. when iplayer goes international i hope torchwood and dr who are available.

but thats the whole waste of time argument really, doing all this crap instead of making on demand subscripition service to provde tv shows/movies.

id gladdly pay $50 or so a month for something like that (its basically sky, so dont mind paying similar price).

It is interesting that NZ doesn't have the services like hulu, that the US have, which gives you a choice, and there is competition in the content market. Yet we are one of the first to introduce this type of law, and is almost as though NZ is a test case for this type of law for the rest of the world. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

I don't mind paying for content if I can get it when I want it. But there isn't really anything I want to see that isn't available on FTA tv

If NZ had a Hulu service it would no doubt be the same old stuff that's been shown on NZ TV so what would we gain?? If we could get US Hulu then I'd be in and happily pay ..

I'm expecting that the key will be movies and music. Are the overseas TV companies or TV doco and series makers going to be bothered as they get paid by the NZ TV networks not individuals avoiding the cost?

So this covers all files download from internet with copyright...
I'm not a fan of downloading stuff but just curious would this be really help to prevent those downloading addiction or people selling infrigement copy.

I think they could avoid this by:

1-setting up VPN connection to overseas server with L2DP connection? (Some Chinese VPN is only $3NZD per month with unlimited data and server worldwide)

2-set up NAS at overseas household and have them download torrent automatically then rename the file add encryption and connect to the NAS from NZ via ftp (or something like RDP to manage download and add encryption because I think most of countries in the world do not have data cap).

For those people who is really into download or perhaps even selling them would this change really be useful? coz there are many ways they can avoid it isn't it?

Just the other day I've even see people start selling download service as a business 50cents for 1GB of data >_<

It's always been illegal to download copyrighted TV shows/movies/music without permission. The new thing now is the reporting and penalties.

Fair enough. Well if there wasnt a massive delay in TV shows coming to NZ I wouldnt have to download them. I would be happy to pay a few dollars for an episode of something. Im watching Season 9 of Hells Kitchen, season 8 hasnt even started yet here in NZ. Masterchef USA Season 2 just started on prime (I think?) im already 15 episodes into that. Just two examples of delays. I dont want to go to jail for downloading TV Shows. lol

No one goes to jail. It's a civil penalty, not criminal. But it will cost.

I thought law starts in Sept, what starts on 11Aug(yesterday?)

"Copyright infringements start counting under the new law from 11th August 2011."

As they have 21 days to file an accusation, so if they nab you on the 11th, they can file that under the new law on 1 Sept, that's how I understand it.

ohh sorry understand now...law kicks in Sept but collection started yesterday..allowing 21 days for infringement notices to be received by ISPs.

There will always be relatively easy ways for determined people to evade detection. The law is mainly out to catch the majority of casual piratebay-type torrenters

What's to stop them accusing people of breach of copyrights for accessing publicly accessible material such as YouTube? Is it time to route all my internet traffic through an encrypted foreign VPN "just in case"?
