DonGould:

Ya, if you read my posts I already said that I can and do borrow kit to do this stuff when I need to.  I do bugger all cabling work, so $18k doesn't make any sense for me.

But my initial comment really were if some of us should be buying this kit, using it to fix our home stuff them just putting it on TM?

I asked about the performance of that thing Steve suggested just out of interest.  Personally I think I'll order on when funds permit.  At that point I guess I can just stack it up against my mates gear and see just how good it is.

Ya I did read your posts, I wouldn't expect anyone to go out and buy a Fluke for just a simple job!, it was just a suggestion that you could hire one. Yaybe just buy the product on the link sbiddle posted (I cant open link for some reason) if you think it'll do the job you need it to.

Oh cool, ta....  :)

The Fluke is a completely different product and a totally different purpose in my mind.

Those units will let you audit the condition of a cable and then report that information on paper/pdf.

The benefit of that is commerical of course, though not very well understood.

If you're getting a house wire up done then you should get someone with a Fluke to do the testing and provide you with reports.

Spending money on Cat6e cables and good termination equipment to then have a bodge job because they didn't test it properly is just silly in my view.

A cable (as I'm sure you're aware) can still work, but can deliver poor performance that can mean an issue when you put your next equipment upgrade on it.  This isn't always true, but if you're paying someone $90 an hour to install the cable and put the connectors on then it  seems silly to me to not spend 5 minutes testing each cable.

That kit that Steve linked defiantly looks on the mark for someone like me who just wants to sort out some telephone cables or do a basic check that a cable is wired up right or get a quick check on where a cable is damaged.

I agree with you on the 'rent' it thing.  If, having discovered that the cable is broken and it then needs to be replaced and the link is important to the client, then hire the Fluke to test the replacement properly.  Also saves on come backs.

Anyway Mike, I'm sure I'm just telling you how to suck an egg...  but I thought I'd just post my view for the interest of anyone else who might be reading.

I would be interested to know what people think of those tone sources.

I was chatting to a mate today that uses tone sources quite a bit and says his work got some cheap ones recently and they failed to push 50m though the cable which meant they couldn't find the other end.

It wasn't until they got another one on site (different brand) that they discovered what the issue was.

I got the Demarc all wired up. A chorus tech turned up and did it!
Will look into the cable tracing tools, but am skeptical of dealextreme - paying half the price for cheap chinese tat that breaks quickly is false economy in my book!

sbiddle: The vast majority of the cheap cable testers are a total waste of time. They all use basic LED's for each pair and can't tell you if you have miswired a pair unless you look at both ends of the adapter.

These are good units http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2-5-lcd-5e-6e-coaxial-and-telephone-cable-tester-4-aa-31560 I've got one myself that I got from elsewhere with different branding.

If you want to trace cabling a tone source is essential.

Ok that's a bloody ripper product!!!!

Everyone who's doing anything with networking should get one of these... I've been using a borrowed tester but this one is just going to make life so much easier!

Thanks Steve for a great heads up!

Owe you some beer for this one.

D
